Do the Shuffle

Posted at 12:02 PM on April 11, 2008 by Tony Lopez (7 Comments)

One last time, brothers and sisters!

"Kick Out the Jams," MC5
Ahh, yes, the Motor City 5, featuring lead singer Rob Tyner, a finalist in the homeliest rock-n-roller contest. He knew how to sport an afro, though.

"Ordinary Guy," Joe Bataan
Part of the great roster of Fania artists in the late 60's. Coining the term "salsoul," he was an early practitioner of an R&B and Latin blend. This song is great because it starts out mellow and then morphs into a killer salsa beat. Fania has reissued most of his early records and they're worth looking for. I also put this song on a recent Muxtape.

"Blue Train," John Coltrane
The title track to his 1957 Blue Note release. It features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Paul Chambers on bass, Kenny Drew on piano, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. A perfect tune for a blue day.

"A Grain of Salt," John Doe
During Bill Deville's Ironman day of broadcasting at SXSW, he had a chance to hang out with the former X frontman. How cool is that?

"Don't Knock My Love, Part 1," Wilson Pickett
It reached #1 on the U.S. R&B charts in 1971.

I consider myself lucky to have been part of the original line-up of hosts that helped launch The Current. What a crazy experiment! And what a ride it's been. But, now it's time for me to step aside and devote all my energy to The Radio Talking Book Network.
Tomorrow will be my last on-air shift. I leave DTS in the capable hands of Mac Wilson. I'll be checking in every once in a while to say hello. Until then, shuffle on!

Say it ain't so Tone!! Say it ain't so!! :(

I'll be listening to you tomorrow and will look forward to your visits! Thanks for all the great music and memories over the past three years. I'll miss ya, man. \m/

Spinning the wheel.......

Styx - Come Sail Away
Uh.... I don't know how this on here. But how poignant for Tony's departure.... "I'm Sailing away..."

Devo - Beautiful World
I think this is my all time favorite Devo song.

Flight of the Conchords - If You're Into It
We were lucky enough to tickets for their now sold out May 13th show at the Orpheum. I hope The Current can get them in for an in-studio!!

Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feed
I saw them opening for Elvis Costello and the Attractions at Northrup may years ago. Despite the dude's voice, they were a tight band.

American Music Club - Johnny Mathis' Feet
I missed their show last night at the Turf Club. Hope it was a good one.

Best of luck in your endevors Tone! rock on!

The Styx is too much, Frick! LOL!

And, to paraphrase the Conchords, These aren't tears of sadness, I've just been cutting onions, making a lasagna, for one...

I think Lucia sitting down with the Conchords would be HI-larious!

Frick's first song is all too appropriate. When I was at KUMM, there was a show that would always use that as their sign-off song, and it's consequently taken on a poignancy for me.

Paul Schneider - Heaven in Hand
Roots-rocker with a voice like Elvis Costello. Some nice, low-key tracks on his Escape Velocity album.

Talking Heads - The Lady Don't Mind
Kind of a so-so Head song. At KUMM, I played this once in a special set honoring Women's Week.

Coldplay - Square One
I don't want to talk about this.

Queen - Flash
I was in tenth grade. A friend of mine talked about the Flash Gordon movie all the time. I promised to buy him the soundtrack off Amazon if he promised never to talk about it again. As luck would have it, I found the soundtrack and film rather amusing. This is the version from one of their compilations, with soundbites from the movie spliced in. "Dispatch War Rocket Ajax...to bring back Gordon's body!"

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
If I remember correctly, Brian Wilson originally wrote this instrumental as a James Bond theme. (even with the tentative title "Run James Run") Pet Sounds, in my mind, is one of the few albums that can get away with having not one, but two instrumental tracks on a 13-song album and still make it work.

As John F. Kennedy once said, the torch has been passed to a new generation. Tony Lopez will be sailing into the sunset, but I hope to keep Do The Shuffle going and continue having some fun here on the Current music blog. Good luck, Tony!

Touche' on the FOTC there Tone! "there's just some perspiration in my tear glands...."

I'm sure they wouldn't quite know what to make of Mary, but it would be a very fun and interesting interview!

Sad to see you go Tony, Seriously. Best Wishes.

Unrest - "Isabel" From the Isabel Bishop EP. I love this band and this song. I really miss them.

Angelo Badalamenti - "Twin Peaks Theme" just beauty. pure. perfect. and if you're a fan of the show you've got to get "The Definitive Gold Box Edition" boxset!! it is so worth it.

Saint Etienne - "Memo to Pricey" Just kind of an interlude. Am I crazy or is the music in the background the same sample from "Since I Left You" by the Avalanches?!

Lucero - "Sad and Lonely" I really like this. I need to get more of their stuff. I hear "Tennessee" is their best (?) Ben Nichols sounds so much like Kurt Cobain raised on Gram Parsons..

John Lennon - "Nobody Told Me" Strange days indeed...
