Do the Shuffle

Sorry for the late post, fellow Shufflers...

"Emma, Get Me a Lemon," The Walkmen
The New York City band is working on the proper follow-up to A Hundred
Miles Off
, a yet-to-be-titled disc slated for release later this
spring. In the meantime, they released a song-for-song cover of Harry
Nilsson's 1974 album Pussy Cats to mostly tepid reviews. Did anybody hear
this thing?

"So Far to Go," Common
Co-starring D'Angelo. We first heard this beat on J Dilla's 2006
disc Donuts, which was released just three days before he died of
complications from lupus. "So Far to Go" was also featured on Dilla's
posthumously released album The Shining. Common explains Dilla's
influence
. The sample is "Don't' Say Goodnight" by the Isley
Brothers.

"Hallelujah," Jeff Buckley
Is there a better cover of this song?

"Cherry Chapstick," Yo La Tengo
One of my favorite YLT songs, this is from And Then Nothing Turned
Itself Inside Out
. Here's a cool live video.

"Roda Viva," Chico Buarque w/ MPB-4
A little samba for your Friday. Buarque was a little more conservative,
musically, than some of his Brazilian peers like Caetano Veloso,
Gilberto Gil, and Gal Costa. Of course, that didn't stop Brazil's
military dictatorship from harassing him. It was hard out there for a
Tropicalista!

Elton John - "All the Nasties
While Madman Across the Water is one of my father's favorite albums of all time, this is a song he often cites as one that tends to "drag on and on".

The Beach Boys - "Catch a Wave"
This song reminds me of those creepy animatronic figures at Circus Pizza back in the day. I'm pretty sure they sang this. If they didn't, then something here is seriously messed up.

Scissor Sisters - "Kiss You Off"
Ana Matronic is such an under-utilized weapon in this band. This was basically the only song she got to sing on Ta-Dah. She's a notorious enough figure already, but she's got the chops to play more of a central role in the band.

Jens Lekman - "Maple Leaves"
One of the songs that put Mr. Lekman on the map.

The Police - "Walking in Your Footsteps
Is Sting aware that the term 'Brontosaurus' was abandoned several decades before? The proper term is 'Apatosaurus'. (I knew those Gary Owen/Eric Boardman videos would come in handy someday)

Jemini The Gifted One - "Funk Soul Sensation" nice...

Big Drill Car - "No Need" Totally sweet slick power pop punk. This is one of the best 24 minute albums ever put to wax. like the Descendents if you only included the super poppy, slick metallic moments.

Gus Gus - "Polyesterday" good stuff

Creeper Lagoon - "Big Money Struggle" I loved this band. not this song or EP so much... not bad, though.

Weezer - "In The Garage" Not much to say about this really. except on of my favorite songs from their best album..

I was getting worried, tone!

Eels - Novocaine For The Soul
The first hit and still one of E's best songs. Several of the post Tarts will be at Pantages on Monday night to see them live. Should be an interesting show. He's known for not sticking to the original arrangements.

Echo & The Bunnymen - What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?
A lesser known EATB album. Pretty much just Ian and Will Sergeant. Mostly acoustic, but they managed some very pretty songs.

Bon Savants - Between The Moon and the Ocean
Still one of the prettiest songs I've ever heard.

MIA - Galang
If you told me 3 years ago that I'd enjoy hip/hop/grime, I would have told you you were crazy. Well, I was crazy.

David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees
I was a huge fan of Japan, and his first solo album threw me for a loop. however, his voice is still one of the best in the biz. This started me on my trek toward the unusual by rediscovering Jon Hassell and Holger Czukay. I was very pleased to have been able to see DS live at the Guthrie in the late '80's. It was a wonderful show.

Frick,

I was at that David Sylvian show, too. the Voice of the Beehive tour, right? I still have the shirt... doesn't fit me as well anymore but.. What a great show!

Wells T: Yep, that's the one. You were the guy in the 7th row on the side, right?

I think he billed it as the "In Praise of Shamans" tour. Great band line-up too.

David Torn - Guitar
Mark Isham - Trumpet
Steve Jansen - Percussion
Richard Barbieri - keyboards
Can't remember the bass player. Maybe Ian Maidman...

I'm on vacation in New Mexico, but I've got my ipod!

So here goes my New Mexican shuffle:

Jens Leckman, "Black Cab": Of my favorites, and so fun live when we saw him at the Triple Rock.

Bon Iver, "Re: Stacks": Also wonderful live, at the Turf.

Mississippi John Hurt, "Trouble I Had All My Days": Delta blues. My writing teacher got me into MJH, and Brett Baldwin gave me the Hurt hookup, too. I'm grateful.

She and Him, "Take It Back": Just got this one and haven't had a chance to soak it in. But I like what I've heard so far.

El Melquiades Ceigo, "Viva Laredo": Old school conjunto. Perfect timing, too, as I head to Texas tomorrow, though not Laredo.

Gotta go. It's almost noon here and there's a green chile burrito somewhere waiting for my mouth.

Romantica played a fantastic cover of "hallelujah" at the Turf on Saturday night!
