"My 3 Songs" for Tuesday

Posted at 1:23 PM on March 25, 2008 by Steve Seel

I love seeing when people discover some music that their parents also dig - mostly because this was nigh unheard of between me and my folks, save for some classical music smatterings (I mean, you try listening to two minutes of a "Gaither Homecoming" CD and see how far you get).

Anyway, Blythe Staley of Mpls writes, "Because my mom's coming to visit me in MN from Idaho and I'm excited to see her! I'm in charge of her iPod, so whenever she visits, we do a little music exchange. These three songs are three of our shared favorites."

1) Simon & Garfunkel, "Only Living Boy in New York"
2) Kasey Chambers, "Pony"
3) Andrew Bird, "Skin Is, My"

If your mom digs Andrew Bird, Blythe, you've got one cool mom.

Facemelter Episode 12: Slash

Posted at 2:10 PM on March 25, 2008 by Brett Baldwin (1 Comments)

Slash's life-story lives up to — or exceeds — the expectations for such a larger-than-life guitarist. Here's a sample of fascinating facts about the guitarist formerly known as Saul Hudson.

  • His father is Anthony Hudson, album cover designer for Geffen Records, including Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark.

  • His mother is clothing designer Ola Hudson. Her work includes costumes for David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth.

  • In Slash, the autobiography of Slash, by Slash, the former Guns N' Roses guitarist credited Seymour Cassel with giving him the nickname "Slash" because he was always on the go and never sitting still.

  • Slash and Steven Adler (G n' R Drummer from '85 –'90) both failed auditions to join 80s Hair Metal band Poison.

And it makes me wonder: does how he grew up seem incredible because of who he ended up being, or is he an awesome guitar player because of the extraordinary circumstances in which he was raised?

Thank about that for a minute, man.
