Do the Shuffle

Posted at 12:01 PM on March 21, 2008 by Tony Lopez (4 Comments)

I got more game than Parker Brothers!

"Drown in My Own Tears," The Smithereens
Ok, so, maybe The Smithereens weren't fashion plates, although you have to admit that Pat DiNizio had a way with a chapeau. And maybe they're weren't exactly easy on the eyes, either. But, dammit, I know killer hooks when I hear them! Their first two albums are really good. Come on, people! Who's with me?

"Breather," Laika
You are getting very, very sleepy...

"Butter," A Tribe Called Quest
The Low End Theory has been well-represented in the Shuffle, lately.

"The Lie and How We Told It," Yo La Tengo
From I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. Well, another baseball season is upon us and many of you might know that YLT are lunatic New York Mets fans. In fact, they name-check Shea Stadium on "Moby Octopad," another track from this album. Ira Kaplan, with the help of Mets legend Ed Kranepool, explains the baseball origin of the band's name. In other sports news, Twins fans get to suffer through a season of watching Johan Santana in a Mets uniform.

"Tropical-Iceland," The Fiery Furnaces
You just never know what you're going to get with these two. In a case of democracy run amok, the band has decided to let fans chart the direction of their next album.

My 3 Songs for Friday

Posted at 12:15 PM on March 21, 2008 by Mark Wheat

Ali from Mpls dropped a set of feel good music for feel good Friday!
She's ambivalent about cover songs but linked this set nicely with
covers of songs made famous by the previous artist in the set;

Led Zeppelin - "Hey Hey What Can I Do?"
Ike and Tina Turner - "Whole Lotta Love"
Nina Simone - "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter"

Ali adds; "I could hear that Zep song every day and never tire of the
bluesy melancholy and Robert's incredible scream at the end!
Ike & Tina hit me in the gut every time, as good as the original and just
as heavy....I love Tina doing 'Mosquito' too but Nina's is stunning.
It's a pretty old school funktastic triple play that I can't stop myself
from including on most of the mix CDs I make for people.

Make your own 3 song mix tape for us and send it our way!

Happy Snow Day and have a safe and happy Easter weekend.

Guest DJ Set 3-21-08

Posted at 10:29 PM on March 21, 2008 by Steve Seel

The Balance series frorm EQ Recordings is one that Mark Wheat has featured before on the Friday Night DJ set. This time we're going to dip into one featuring a mix by Jimmy Van M.

Born in Belguim, he got his career start in Orlando FL, making his name playing gigs at Orlando's Beacham Theater, alongside other pioneering American trance DJs such as Kimball Collins. Orlando proved a pretty fertile ground for him, being an area pretty supportive of the trance genre. Eventually he was making all kind of connections, some through the DJ booking agency that he founded there as well ... and one of his big breaks came with his production work on such things as Sasha and Digweed's Communicate album.

Excerpts from "Balance 10.1"
Mixed by Jimmy Van M

Mouse Down - Sexy 4 All
James Figurine -555566688833 (The Field Remix)
Mauro Picotto - Maybe, Maybe Not (Smith & Selway remix)
Umek - Carbon Occasions
Steve T - There Were Lights (Moonbeam remix)
