"My 3 Songs" for Monday

Posted at 1:57 PM on March 3, 2008 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

It's not TV on the radio today; you might say it's "radio on the TV on the radio." Mark Janovec from Hudson WI writes, "I picked three of my favorite songs that are more well known for their appearances on television that for what little radio airplay they have received. I thought it would be a nice turnabout to hear these songs on the radio for a change. Plus, I have never heard The Minuntemen on The Current ... so that's enough of a reason for giving them their due!"

1) Minutemen, "Corona" (used as theme for Jackass)
2) Big Star, "In The Street" (Cheap Trick version used for That 70s Show)
3) Nick Drake, "Pink Moon" (used oh so famously in that lovely VW ad)

Thanks Mark! A fine credit-where-credit-is-due set.

How could Brett and I talk about facemelting guitar solos without recognizing Brian May of Queen? We couldn't. The song "Brighton Rock" by Queen is famous for the guitar solo. We think Brian May's guitar playing is out of this world. Speaking of out of this world, did you know May is an astrophysicist?

Check out this week's episode of Facemelter to learn how Brian May makes his awesome guitar sounds and tell us what you think!

"My 3 Songs" for Wednesday

Posted at 1:40 PM on March 5, 2008 by Steve Seel

Peter McKown of Lakeville MN didn't have to go far for an idea for his set today; he writes, "I make a mix of my current favorite songs each month and these are the first three songs of this month's mix."

1) Regina Spektor, "Hotel Song"
2) The Beatles, "Got To Get You Into My Life"
3) Arcade Fire, "Building Downtown (Antichrist Television Blues)"

What a nice surprise to get that Beatles tune between those two newer things. Thanks Peter!

"My 3 Songs" for Thursday

Posted at 1:36 PM on March 6, 2008 by Steve Seel

Boy, it seems just about everybody is pining for Spring right about now. I'm not so sure why we do this, since it is, after all, only the first week of March; you understand, people, that we could have snow until ice until the end of April. Maybe it was that lousy commute yesterday morning that just sufficiently ticked everybody off to put them over the edge.

But anyway. Molly Peterson of St. Paul is ready for the change of season, and at the very least is determinded to bring about some change sonically. She writes, "I love these three songs because they are light and springy to me. They make me want to be in the sun, drive with my windows down, and put a smile on my face."

1) Andrew Bird, "Tables and Chairs"
2) The Little Ones, "Cha Cha Cha"
3) The Boy Least Likely To, "Be Gentle With Me"

Thanks Molly. I think those tunes did the job.

Do the Shuffle

Posted at 12:03 PM on March 7, 2008 by Tony Lopez (5 Comments)

I gotta make moves!

“No Time to Play,” Guru f/ D.C. Lee & Ronny Jordan
Guru put out the first volume of the Jazzmatazz series in 1993, and it just about perfectly embodied the whole hip-hop/jazz movement. He recruited jazz heavyweights like Donald Byrd, Branford Marsalis and Roy Ayers to put a jazz vibe that hip-hop had only been starting to incorporate. It really is amazing and belongs in every music lover’s library. On “No Time to Play,” Ronny Jordan plays guitar and D.C. Lee contributes vocals. She used to sing with Paul Weller’s The Style Council. In fact, they were once married and have two children.

“What?,” A Tribe Called Quest
I generally consider this the lead-in track to “Scenario.”

“Cars and Parties,” Edith Frost
Edith Frost is a singer in the alt-country vein and deserves more time on the air. Any time on the air, really. She’s been spending the last year or so making guest appearances on the albums of other artists like Sonny Smith, The Zincs and Morning Recordings. She hasn’t put out a record of her own since 2005’s It’s a Game. This song comes from her Drag City release, Wonder Wonder.

“It’s All in Your Mind,” Beck
As Mac Wilson said last week, it just wouldn’t be a Shuffle without Beck.
Update at 2:39pm: According to Pitchfork, Danger Mouse will be producing Beck's next album. So it's official! I am now anticipating Beck's next release!

“Loving Cup,” The Rolling Stones
I love, love, love this song!

"My 3 Songs" for Monday

Posted at 2:00 PM on March 10, 2008 by Steve Seel (3 Comments)

A canine set today from Meredith Mescher of East Lansing, MI -- specifically, wolves. "The words 'wolf' and 'wolves' seem to pop up in a lot of songs/bands that I listen to," she says. "Plus, the more you say the word, the stranger it sounds. Wolf, wolf, wolf." (Does anybody hear barking?)

1) Le Loup, "We Are Gods, We Are Wolves"
2) Sea Wolf, "You're A Wolf"
3) TV On the Radio, "Wolf Like Me"

By the way, "loup" is French for "wolf." Meredith has covered all her bases here. Nice job Meredith!

"My 3 Songs" for Tuesday

Posted at 1:38 PM on March 11, 2008 by Steve Seel

A nice one today from Kristin (no home town specified). She writes of her three tunes: "I'm turning 40 today, and am wishing for a set of songs that marked milesontes in my life to this point. The first one was sort of an anthem for me when I kicked some unhealthy habits in my 20's. The second was the song my husband and I chose for our wedding, since it's romantic yet realistic. And the third was a favorite of my older son, who requested it by hollering "Pink Moon" over and over, which somewhat dimished its soothing properties, I think. It's also what I insisted on listening to in the car on the way to the hospital to give birth to my second son.

My sons, now 2 and 4, often insist on CDs rather than the radio in the car, so I have to pick my battles to assert my occasional right to listen to The Current.

1) Sinead O'Connor: "Feel So Different"
2) John Hiatt: "Have A Little Faith"
3) Nick Drake: "Pink Moon"

Happy 40th Kristin, and thanks for a terrific set.

Facemelter Episode 10: Kirk Hammett

Posted at 3:40 PM on March 11, 2008 by Brett Baldwin

Now here's a scary thought — Kirk Hammett replaced Dave Mustaine in Metallica in 1983 — so he's been melting faces for 25 years in the best-known metal band in the world. With history like that, it's no wonder he's been elevated to such iconic status. He's been in the news lately on account of his working with Randall Amplifiers and ESP guitars, to create signature cabinets, stacks and guitars to emulate Metallica's sound. And all that's fine and good if you want to try to sound like Hammett and melt your own face. Or you could just let me and Jill do the honors with our latest episode, featuring his solo from "Creeping Death" off the classic Ride the Lightning album. It's up to you.

"My 3 Songs" for Wednesday

Posted at 3:00 PM on March 12, 2008 by Steve Seel

It's some musical coffee today from Aaron Stoltman of Mpls, who writes, "LIke so many unfortunates, I spend my day behind a desk fighting and endless war against the 'unproductive' characteristics of falling asleep. These songs possess the energy and variety necessary to aid me and hopefully others in the fight to stay up!"

1) The American Anaglog Set, "The Hatist"
2) Matthew Dear, "Shy"
3) MGMT, "Electric Feel"

Personally, I think we should have naptime at the office instead. But that's just me.

Here we are at SXSW!

Posted at 5:30 PM on March 12, 2008 by Bill DeVille (3 Comments)

Well hello. I will be sporadically checking in from Austin TX!

It's been a long day already but it's just getting started. We are setting up camp at our broadcast facility at 7th & Red River. Been here for a couple of hours and already have ran into Kim from the Fine Line, Sonja from 1st Avenue, Taco from the Cabooze and legendary Twin Cities journalist Jim Walsh. I don't run into that many familiar faces in the Twin Cities in a week!

While waiting for my connecting flight I ran into one of the groups we'll be featuring , Wye Oak. They are a charming new duo from Baltimore. They will be live on our broadcast Saturday. I am very exited about them.

Now it's time to figure out what to do next!

Bumping in Texas

Posted at 9:16 AM on March 13, 2008 by Christina Schmitt

Thurston Moore ran smack into Nate Kranz on 6th Street in Austin, TX, last night...Fact! Although Kranz and Sonia Grover see rock gods all the time booking bands at First Avenue, there's still nothing like running into your hero on the street. We briefly considered stalking him, but instead agreed to go see him, J. Mascis, etc. at a party later today doing a set of Lou Reed covers.

And so begins another awesome SXSW, running into stars plus everyone you know from Minneapolis. Before the Moore bump-in last night, we went to the Free Yr Radio party at La Zona Rosa. Times New Viking were playing (Nate loves them). They're a three piece - keyboards, surf guitar, drums. Sarah Askari from City Pages said she was amazed to discover there was a girl in the band. Apparently their records are just noisy enough to blur gender. I was there to see Yeasayer. Their vocals are so beautiful, and the hippy vibe was tolerable. It's a mystery, though, why the guitar player, who is really good, would spend half the set just standing there pushing a sample button. I'm kind of old school about that.

And so too begins the non-stop text messaging. Alison Stolpa, another TC pal who is co-hosting tomorrow's Modern Radio showcase, texted from The Slits show. Said it was "English girls doing reggae rock"--the focus now of the '70s punk girl group. They're playing a lot this festival.

Got to get to The Current's broadcast to see The Raveonettes at 11 a.m. yeah! And Motorhead is playing a show later today. I'll let you know if I score a Lemmy siting.

Ever heard of Rokkervil?

Posted at 11:41 AM on March 13, 2008 by Bill DeVille (3 Comments)

This place is crazy. Music is on every corner!

Music is in the air around here! on every street. I have never seen more rock-n-roll vans hauling a trailer in my life! Should mention a few of my highlights from yesterday...Van Morrison played a 1 hour set a really cool club called La Zona Rosa. It was awesome to see Van the man playing the ukulele up close and personal. He's now into his 60's and his vocal prowess is still amazing!

Also had a chance to attend a portion of the Austin Music Awards at the Austin Music Hall last night. Spoon cleaned house winning a bushel basket full of awards. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top was in the house! He presented the legendary Roky Erickson with musician of the year award. Then it was my favorite set of the night! Ever heard of Rokkervil? The Austin band Okkervil River played a smoking little set including my favorite song of last year, "Our Life is Not a Movie or Maybe" & were joined by the king of the Austin psychedelic scene of the 60's, Mr. Roky Erickson! Rokkeril did several tunes including a blistering version of one of my "go to" songs, "Your Gonna Miss Me."
Now that was a once in a lifetime performance! The kind of thing that can only happen here in Austin!

Now it's off to see the Twin Cities own Alarmists.

How 'bout that heat?

Posted at 12:53 PM on March 13, 2008 by Mary Lucia

There is something so comforting about roaming the streets of someone else's city and seeing so many faces from home.
Last night we got the lay of the land of our broadcast space and then promptly went out for Burritos and Margeritas.
Some opted to see Van "The Man" Morrison I sat at an outdoor table with half the staff of First Avenue.
Our favorite game is spot the non musician celebrity.
Last night we thought we saw Ben Stein, turned out to be somebody's dad.
I've still been smirking all day thinking of the music "expert" from Boston I sat next to on the plane telling his friend everything he knew about MN bands such as Walt Mink and Soul Asylum. No comment.
Things are running so smooth so far.
Lot's of excitement about our bands today...
Local music connections continues as we welcome Cloud Cult to the Current's stage at 4:45pm.
The big unknown for me today are The Rascals a young band from the UK that I dig but don't know much about as they are literally at the beginning of their careers.
I hope they don't drop kick me.
P.S did I mention Motorhead???!!

Rock-n-Roll never dies the jeans just keep getting skinnier

Posted at 7:21 PM on March 13, 2008 by Bill DeVille (2 Comments)

After checking out a fantastic set by Sons & Daughters on the Current Free Yr Radio Stage I headed off too the Fader/Levi's bash. A bunch of fun it was! My favorite new band at this very moment is Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong...got a nice ring to it, doesn't it? This band melds 1964 Rolling Stones with the mod-pop sound of the Jam. The guitar player looked a bit like the late Rolling Stones guitar player Brian Jones and the singer a little like this fellow named Jagger. It seems Rock-n-roll never dies the jeans just keep getting skinnier! Seems every gent you see around here is dressed in skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors including most of the bands.

I checked out a group called the Grand Ole Party. They are a trio from San Diego. The easy comparison would be that they sound sorta like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Pretty cool band. One of their tunes has a funky reggae groove. Sounded nice on this sunshiny day in Austin. Also was impressed with the San Francisco band Birdmonster. They have a really spirited and fresh twist on American music.

Wrapped up the afternoon a few minutes ago with a great set on the Current Free your radio stage from The Rascals!

Now it's time to bring on the Tex Mex food and to figure out tonight's game plan.

Flat tire, don't stop me now!

Posted at 10:06 AM on March 14, 2008 by Christina Schmitt

A flat tire on a bike messenger's rickshaw put an end to my outing last night. Why I was trying to get across town seems silly to me now, but that's SXSW--plans are continually morphing and getting weirder.

At some point during the Current's broadcast yesterday - I think it was after the phenomenal DeVotchKa performance - I realized that I was not going to have time to see Motorhead. Although I did get to run over to stand outside Stubb's, where they were playing, and catch 15 minutes of the rock.

Then the Current's best friend Kate Beckman stopped by and the next thing I knew, the broadcast was over and we were off to the other side of the freeway--where Austin's true counterculture lives--to see a band called Dark Meat. How to describe this? If you've seen the TC band Chooglin - horn section, crazy drummer, soul-singing Stooges party band - then imagine Chooglin plus another drummer with full drum kit, several other percussionists, a female vocalist, violins and... I think I saw someone with a clarinet, but hard to say. I was too busy tucking my Lone Star under my arm so I wouldn't get any blue confetti in it (some guy was shooting it out of a gun).

All the Dark Meat-mates had these swipes of blue paint under their eyes - sort of a part tribal, part high school football player look. Some of their fans proudly sported the blue swipe, too. We saw many of them later on at the Jay Reatard show. Jay Reatard, by the way, was awesome with his new wave/garage/Flying V/curly hair rock'n'roll.

Next we jetted over to Emo's Jr to see the Marked Men, legendary Texas garage rockers. Wow. No kidding. I haven't had stars in my eyes in awhile, but when the one guitarist/singer let if fly, playing his Danelectro, I thought I found my soulmate. Then someone told me my soulmate was soon leaving for Japan to get married.

Life is short. Which is why I suddenly felt inspired to hop in the rickshaw to go see my TC buddies Birthday Suits playing across town. That's when the flat happened, and after a brief discussion about bad omens, I decided it was time to go back to the hotel. I'll get to see Birthday Suits at the Modern Radio showcase today, yeah!

Do the Shuffle

Posted at 10:33 AM on March 14, 2008 by Tony Lopez (3 Comments)

I am young and I'm alive.

"In the Round," The Cardigans
The Swedish quintet put out a best-of CD earlier this year. I'm still waiting for their compilation of Black Sabbath covers. Nina Persson's side project, A Camp, is reported to be releasing its second album later this year, again with the help of Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse. A Camp's first disc, from 2001, was a journey into country. In fact, Nina's got that quiver in her voice that reminds me a little of Emmylou Harris. "In the Round" is from The Cardigans' most recent album, Super Extra Gravity.

"Banta," Daby Toure
Toure (no relation to Ali Farka and Vieux Farka) is a Mauritanian singer-songwriter who is just as influenced by someone like Mark Knopfler as he his the music of his homeland. Pleasant stuff.

"Lume, Lume," Fanfare Ciocarlia
A little Roma music is good for the soul.

"Break You Off," The Roots
One of my favorite hip-hop acts. ?uestlove and Black Thought are the bomb! The Roots are looking at a late April release for their 10th album, Rising Down. The steamy video guest stars the actor Hassan Johnson, known to many as "Wee-Bey" Brice from The Wire, R.I.P.

"Juanita," The Flying Burrito Brothers
Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman basically invented country-rock. This track is from The Gilded Palace of Sin, one of those archetypal albums that traces a huge arc from the roots of a musical movement to its present-day form, in this case what we've come to call "alt-country." Chris Hillman was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, along with the rest of The Byrds. In 2006, the documentarian Gandulf Hennig filmed a biography of Parsons's life, Fallen Angel. If you're into the history of music, it's a must-see.

Heavy Makes You Happy

Posted at 10:46 AM on March 14, 2008 by Bill DeVille (4 Comments)

I just noticed my right hand is covered in stamps and bracelets from yesterday's festivities here in Austin at the SXSW festival. Guess that means I've covered some ground!

Saw some cool stuff last night. The highlight was a new band from the England called The Heavy. This band is really something. They are funky and soulful and they rock! The singer, Swaby, is incredibly charismatic and full of swagger. I hear hints of Curtis Mayfield & even Jimi Hendrix. One track even sounded a bit like Screaming Jay Hawkins, "I Put a Spell on You." Really looking forward to tomorrows set at the Current's Free Yr Radio Stage!

I checked out a set by Dan Sartain. He is from Birmingham, Alabama. Sartain has described his as, "Chris Isaak hooked up to jumper cables." Not a bad description for the gent who has opened for both the Hives and the White Stripes. His sound is kind of a trashy mix of rockabilly and blues. I've seen him before and his live shows are kind of uneven but he sure delivered in his all too short set last night!

Also took in a set by a Texas group called the Marked Men. If you like the Buzzcocks and the Ramones you'll dig these guys.

Things are heating up in a hurry. It's supposed to be in the 90's today in Austin.

Mr. Jones and Me

Posted at 9:59 PM on March 14, 2008 by Ali Lozoff

There is more than one reason why my face is pink and flushed today. Besides getting over a wicked sinus thingy that made me feel like my head was going to explode on the airplane, I didn't apply quite enough sun block today, and I am way more aware of the existence of my forehead than I have ever been before. I'm going to peel like an orange later this week. But I barely noticed the burn happening as I was so busy going out of my brain with excitement and happiness at today's live broadcast. The entire day went incredibly well, though for me the excitement really kicked in when Billy Bragg showed up. What a true gent. The crowd ate up his signature blend of political protest, humor and showmanship. I mean this in the best possible way - that guy should have his own show on the Vegas strip. His stage presence and patter is amazing.

So then Nino Moschello and Darondo stopped by. I didn't know what to expect, but I didn't expect to hand over my extra-large bottle of generic pain reliever to be used as a percussion instrument. (Sounded pretty good though!) I can't even describe Darondo here - you'll just have to watch the video to witness the funk soul brother in his full glory. Hi-larious and amazing. Like James Brown, Al Green, Morris Day and Redd Foxx all in one, with an awesome backing band. It was a perfect jammy vibe for a sun drenched afternoon.

But then, then, then.... then came Carbon/Silicon. Now, I'm slightly more than a casual fan of The Clash. Lunatic is probably a better word. I made the heartbreaking decision once to pass up an opportunity to talk with Joe Strummer, thinking I didn't want to be one of those people that gushes to someone how much they looooooove them, etc etc. Sadly, Joe passed away shortly after. So there was no way I was going to miss at least shaking Mick's hand. And shake it I did. I looked him square in the eye and thanked him for helping shape my world view. He couldn't have been sweeter. A total doll. (For the record, Tony James is no slouch either.) They also put on a great show to a packed crowd that waited patiently for hours in the blazing sun. It was truly a high point for my musical life, not to mention this year's SXSW broadcast. I can't wait for tomorrow. I'm going to try to score a picture with another long time hero, John Doe.

As Dizzee Rascal said this morning, "It's public radio, can I get an OHHHHHHH....".

Guest DJ Set 3-14-08

Posted at 10:26 PM on March 14, 2008 by Steve Seel

Mark Wheat's absence this week (due to his presence at our big SXSW hootenany in Austin) nonwithstanding, our regular Friday night Guest DJ set comes your way as always. Mark made sure to leave me with an excellent one before he boarded the plane for the Lone Star State.

This week, its a new mix from our friends at fabric -- #38 in their series
by the German duo known as M.A.N.D.Y. The duo is comprised of longtime friends and kindred spirits Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung. The two met in their teens, and immediately cultivated a friendship based on a mutual love of sports, compilation tapes, Tears for Fears and Janis Joplin records (!).

When the two discovered Chigaco acid house in the late 80s, their love of electronica was born. They spent the 90s cutting their chops as DJs, and it was 2004's Get Physical compilation that got them their true first blast of widespread noteriety among house and techno lovers alike.

M.A.N.D.Y.: from fabric 38

Tim Paris - Widow Diskow / Marketing
Imps aka Minilogue - Unkle Limps (Turkish Version) / Mule Electronic
Voodeux - The Spell / Mothership
Miguel Toro - Cure (Oil of Mars vs. Samim Mix) / Moon Harbour
Todd Bodine - Secret Edge / Mothership
Livio & Robby vs ARc - XY (Terrace Mix) / (unreleased)
Gel Abril - Papa Dee / Ovum
Jona - Puppets (Dan Curtin Remix) / Resopal

Just another day at SXSW

Posted at 11:13 PM on March 14, 2008 by Bill DeVille

My day started with a bang. Saw live "grime" for the 1st time in my life. Dizzy Rascal was on the Current's Free Yr Radio Stage at 11AM this morning. This got has got the goods. Dizzy is truly an entertainer. Make sure you take a look at his performance while you're visiting thecurrent.org!

There is all kinds of music happening at this festival. Headed over to the Red House Records showcase and took in some peace among the chaos. I took in a set from Storyhill. Sure is nice to see this group back among the living. Just love the sweet close harmonies of Chris Cunningham & Johnny Hermanson. Enjoyed a few tunes from the Pines as well.

My next stop was to have a listening party for the upcoming release from the Twin Cities own Atmosphere. The Album is set for release April 22nd & will include a DVD. I am very impressed with what I heard. It's funky, soulful and has a nice live band feel. Atmosphere's, "When Life Gives You Lemons..." also features a special guest you may have heard of...Tom Waits does some beatboxing on one of the tracks. Apparently Waits son is a huge Atmosphere fan & helped make it happen.

A few other assorted highlights...saw a really great band from LA called the Aggrolites. These guys mix old school reggae with rock, soul, & funk. I want to rent this band for a summer party someday. They are a blast!

Oh...I forgot to mention I shook one of my heroes, Mick Jones of Carbon/Silicon, hand today!!

Feeling your inner walleye

Posted at 9:55 AM on March 15, 2008 by Christina Schmitt

We all went crazy for the bartender's t-shirt at the Modern Radio SXSW showcase yesterday. It was yellow, retro, said "Minnesota" in big letters and had a fish on it. "Do you think he's being ironic?" my friend asked. No, I found out, he was just an ex-Minnesotan feeling his inner walleye.

The showcase started a little after noon with the Nuggets-inspired party of Private Dancer. It was fun watching all these Minnesota bands come rolling in for the party - STNNNG, Birthday Suits, His Mischief with 12 cases of beer donated by Summit. The crowd was a little sparse - no surprise since the party was on the other side of the Capitol from the rest of the festival. Thank god for the Dillo - the free trolley bus that runs up Congress Ave and is air conditioned. It took us coolly back to the festival for the afternoon, which was well on its way to 90 degrees.

I met up with Sarah Askari at the Village Voice party to see the Black Keys. Those guys can make a lot of good garage rock for just two guys. Then we hussled over to the Spin party to see X! It was super cool to see reunited and looking like they were having fun. Was there still a romantic spark there between John Doe and Exene? Nope.

Later in the night, I caught an early set of P&#@%ed Jeans at the Sub Pop showcase. Their music is so messy - cool like Flipper - but I wasn't expecting them to be good looking. Hot! Then I trekked over to see Telepathe - girl group avant electronic band. Kind of snoozy. I then saw Be Your Own Pet--fun times like the Tyrades. But the PA gave out on them, and delayed the show. I just couldn't make it until the J Mascis set. Will I get to see him and Thurston Moore before we leave Texas? It's a cliffhanger. Stay tuned.

Sizzlin Saturday @ SXSW

Posted at 1:31 PM on March 15, 2008 by Lindsay Kimball

This is Mark Wheat, stealing Kimball's ID! First I want to give a huge shout out to her, and all the behind the scenes people who have made this possible. It's a wonderful crew of people to work with under stressful conditions, putting on so much live music to a tight schedule in this heat. I hope you're enjoying the results!

A scorching set from The Heavy just started my day...yeah I know it's early afternoon but I had a long night! These guys are one of the big buzz bands of the whole festival and now we all know why, check out their sampling of "I Put a Spell on You" on the archive of the sessions. Another delight was their attitude, full of joy and energy and very grateful to be playing even though their schedule, like many here, is jam packed.

I had some glorious highlights during my gig hopping last night :
The Ruby Suns from New Zealand had a few 'technical difficulties' but managed a wonderful sense of improvisation. The 3 members swapped instruments punching samples in and out, bashing on stand up drums intermittently and furiously strumming their various guitars. They convinced me they were making it up as they went along until their final song 'Tane Mahuta' which we've been playing from their debut. They nailed it as tight as could be!

We all seem to agree here that 'Does It Offend You, Yeah?' is one of the best new band names. So I thought I would check them out at the legendary venue Emo's which is two rooms linked by an L shaped outside area. The place was jammed to witness some nearly death defying dancey rock grooves. The lead singer was swinging from the rafters and throwing himself around the stage crashing into equipment . He knocked both the keyboard and a mike stand into the crowd. If you like the Rapture or even Prodigy, check these guys out, they're not just a good name band!

I camped out towards the end of the night at a venue with a cool name, Red Eye Fly!
So many of the shows get too packed to get into late in the night and I didn't want to miss CLOUD CULT after hearing the new album last week. It might sound bizarre to go to see a local band amoung 1600 groups from all over the world, but because of my schedule on the air, I hadn't seen these guys in a long while. The only disappointments were the shortness of the set, and the fact that I couldn't bid on the painting that they made while they played, it wouldn't fit in my suitcase!

Another tradition here seems to be bumping into band members on the street and finding out about small shows that have been added since the official schedule was released. So I'm shooting off now to catch Earl Greyhound after bumping into Matt of the band who immediately recognised me as the guy who was on the video clip with them, recorded last time they came thru the cities. They promise to have new hooj tunes, I can't wait...see our appetites are still not sated, crazy huh?!?!?

Seeya back home next week, stay safe and be peaceful to each other!

This is a public service announcement.. with Guitars!!

Friday afternoon's broadcast made me high for hours.
Billy Bragg had many of us in tears, (the good kind.)
laughs, hope and a powerful message.
It was one of those beautiful moments in rock where you look out at the crowd and realize you aren't the only one feeling a certain way. Wicked.
Darondo and Nino Moschella were funked up!!
At 60 something, trust me the dude was working the 5 teeth he had left.
Rounding out an excellant afternoon of music were Carbon Silicon, my mouth was so dry and my hands were shaking.
With anticipation at a fever pitch, there was a huge crowd gathered, some major Clash fans had driven from Canada just to see our Carbon Silicon Broadcast.
The band stayed on their tour bus until the last minute and believe me there was a bit of a Cheech and Chong cloud.
Truth be told not alot of people rattle my cage, I've been in radio for 15 years and have met a lot of musicans but I couldn't help it, suddenly I was sitting on stage as the14 year old Mary Lucia.
The Clash changed my life, made me want to rock and question everything.
I remember as a kid staring at the cover of "London Calling" Paul Simonon smashing his bass, thinking this is so IT.
To be on stage with Mick Jones an actual member of "the only band that matters" ??
I'll never forget it.

So Bill Deville is finishing up a 7 hour (!!!) show here at SXSW
We have likened him to Jerry Lewis at the end of a telethon.
John Doe just played the "Golden State" live and I sang along in the front like a huge dork.
Thanks Texas you were charming hosts, keep it classy Austin!

You don't have to go home but you can't stay here.

Posted at 7:41 PM on March 16, 2008 by Ali Lozoff

Well, actually, we did have to go home. And home we are. The country's biggest nightclub has closed for another year, and we survived to talk about it. Feeling a little bit like a Lifter Puller song at this point, ("The Current vs. The End of the Evening", perhaps?), after spending an awesome but hot 3 days rocking our asphalt at SXSW. There were so many amazing performances on our stage, and so many memorable moments I hardly know where to begin. I've likened our SXSW broadcasts to summer camp before, but I've decided it's a bit more like Outward Bound. It's grueling and intense, you spend a LOT of time with a small group of your coworkers, and it can get a little trying, but in the end you wouldn't change the experience for anything. I'm so impressed with our staff right now I can't begin to describe it - what a bunch of talented people I am fortunate to work alongside. Not to get too personal, but during the Carbon/Silicon performance, we all had "a moment". I saw Melanie well up with pride and it got me going too - what started in a little hotel conference room three years ago had turned into a major outdoor broadcast with one of the most legendary figures in rock history hamming it up for our audience. Now that's a payoff.

So check out the awesome live performances (in either audio or video form), browse through our Flickr photo gallery, and let us know what your favorite moments are. And thank you to the many many Minnesotans who stopped by the booth to say hello and show some hometown pride. I think the population of the Twin Cities dropped by 10% last week with the number of bands and fans from home that made the trip. I don't think I can accurately describe the wonderful but surreal feeling of being 1,000 miles away from home and seeing the kids from Doomtree, Chooglin', Solid Gold and Romantica stroll by. (All at different times, I should add.) I vote next year the whole state takes a collective Spring Break vacation next year and joins us in Austin for breakfast tacos and late night brats from Best Wurst.

Thanks again to everyone who helped make this trip happen and to all of you who tuned in.

Viva Billy Bragg!

Jacki Di Gregorio of Mpls cleary has some kind of demon, or demons, to purge ... it's not for us to understand. "This is a public exorcism," she says, "I hope it works!"

1) CSS, "Let's Make Love and Listen to Death From Above"
2) LCD Soundsystem, "Someone Great"
3) Bon Iver, "Skinny Love"

Well, thankfully we got through that without levitating beds, spewing pea-soup or any sort of preistly defenstration. Hope it worked too, Jacki!

New Raconteurs Album - Next Week!

Posted at 4:10 AM on March 18, 2008 by Mac Wilson

Taking a page from Radiohead, the Raconteurs drop word of their brand new album, Consolers of the Lonely, in the middle of the night. Even better, it's coming out next week! Pitchfork has the full press release, so you can dig in to all the details. 14 new tracks, and the album will be available digitally (at 320kb, no less), as well as on CD and vinyl.

I was actually thinking about Jack White's recorded output earlier today. The catalyst was the fact that the new Gnarls Barkley record, The Odd Couple, will be released in just a few weeks. Gnarls Barkley and the Raconteurs have always been permanently linked in my brain; I went to Europe for two weeks after my college graduation in the spring of 2006, and by the time I got back to America, "Crazy" and "Steady, As She Goes" had totally blown up and were the biggest hits in the country. I knew the Raconteurs had been in the studio, and I found it strange that I hadn't heard anything about them lately. One of my longtime maxims regarding Jack White is that you never know when one of his projects is going to release a new album -- with his tendencies towards low-fi recording and mixing, an album could pop up out of the blue at any time. I also thought it was cool that with his involvement in two bands, we have the potential for a new Jack White album every year! (The White Stripes in odd years, the Raconteurs in evens) Looks like both of these things have come to pass; they only finished mastering the album at the beginning of March! I wasn't totally won over by Broken Boy Soldiers, but I look forward to seeing what White and Brendan Benson can pull off together the second time around.

You've probably heard the new Black Keys single "Strange Times" on the air recently. It's a fun hand-clapping jam that really puts Patrick Carney's drumming at the fore. And that's all well and good, but over here at the Facemelter desk, we've still got some ringing in our ears from frontman/guitarist Dan Auerbach's numerous awesome solos. Peter Giles of St. Paul writes today, "These were my favorite performances from The Current's SXSW broadcast." He adds, "Darondo = new favorite!"

1) Darondo, "Legs (Part 1)"
2) The Heavy, "That Kind of Man"
3) Blitzen Trapper, "Wild Mountain Nation"

Yeah Peter, it was quite a broadcast this year. We're so glad you dug it!

It was something to welcome the whole crew back from Austin yesterday and feel the vibe just coming off of them -- everyone was just so invigorated. I don't know if she's gotten props anywhere else, aside from at the end of the broadcasts themselves, but a salute really needs to go out to our Music Director Melanie Walker, who's responsible for putting together the most incredible lineup of guests we've ever had down there. The mix of old and new, young versus verteran, the balance of genres and styles and sensibilities was astounding and thrilling. It was a shining moment for the station, I think.

So, if you want to relive any of it, or if you missed anything, it's all right here.

With the buzz from SXSW still hanging in the air, we have another set today that takes advantage of it. Lincoln Scully from Mpls writes, "I was at SXSW last week, and while checking out some bands and standing iin the sun, I neglected to wear sunscreen. Needless to say, I have quite a sunburn that has decided to start peeling today. In honor of (this fact), I want to play a set for the sun."

1) Rage Against the Machine, "People of the Sun"
2) They Might Be Giants, "Why Does the Sun Shine"
3) Emily Haines, "Reading In Bed" live in The Current's studios (she throws in a bit of "House of the Rising Sun" at the end)

Two words Lincoln: aloe vera. (By they way, that segue from RATM into TMBG was one of the most genius, oddball seques I've ever heard. Nice job).

"My 3 Songs" for Thursday

Posted at 1:35 PM on March 20, 2008 by Steve Seel

So Spring springs today, and soooo many folks are pretty dern ready fer it, your humble host emphatically included. I wish it would stick around a while, but alas, it's litereally here today, gone tomorrow (winter storm warning in effect starting at 7pm tonight). But hang on baby ...

Anyway, Lisa Carlson of Mpls writes, "Spring is my absolute favorite time of year and these songs sum up how I feel about the first day of Spring, especially "Snow is Gone" by Josh Ritter. My sister and I celebrate March 20th like a holiday and it wouldn't be the same without Josh! I hope it's sunny on Thursday!

1) The Beatles, "Good Day Sunshine"
2) Jason Collett, "I'll Bring The Sun"
3) Josh Ritter, "Snow Is Gone"

Positively glorious set, Lisa. Thanks.

Posted at 12:01 PM on March 21, 2008 by Tony Lopez (4 Comments)

I got more game than Parker Brothers!

"Drown in My Own Tears," The Smithereens
Ok, so, maybe The Smithereens weren't fashion plates, although you have to admit that Pat DiNizio had a way with a chapeau. And maybe they're weren't exactly easy on the eyes, either. But, dammit, I know killer hooks when I hear them! Their first two albums are really good. Come on, people! Who's with me?

"Breather," Laika
You are getting very, very sleepy...

"Butter," A Tribe Called Quest
The Low End Theory has been well-represented in the Shuffle, lately.

"The Lie and How We Told It," Yo La Tengo
From I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One. Well, another baseball season is upon us and many of you might know that YLT are lunatic New York Mets fans. In fact, they name-check Shea Stadium on "Moby Octopad," another track from this album. Ira Kaplan, with the help of Mets legend Ed Kranepool, explains the baseball origin of the band's name. In other sports news, Twins fans get to suffer through a season of watching Johan Santana in a Mets uniform.

"Tropical-Iceland," The Fiery Furnaces
You just never know what you're going to get with these two. In a case of democracy run amok, the band has decided to let fans chart the direction of their next album.

My 3 Songs for Friday

Posted at 12:15 PM on March 21, 2008 by Mark Wheat

Ali from Mpls dropped a set of feel good music for feel good Friday!
She's ambivalent about cover songs but linked this set nicely with
covers of songs made famous by the previous artist in the set;

Led Zeppelin - "Hey Hey What Can I Do?"
Ike and Tina Turner - "Whole Lotta Love"
Nina Simone - "Funkier Than A Mosquito's Tweeter"

Ali adds; "I could hear that Zep song every day and never tire of the
bluesy melancholy and Robert's incredible scream at the end!
Ike & Tina hit me in the gut every time, as good as the original and just
as heavy....I love Tina doing 'Mosquito' too but Nina's is stunning.
It's a pretty old school funktastic triple play that I can't stop myself
from including on most of the mix CDs I make for people.

Make your own 3 song mix tape for us and send it our way!

Happy Snow Day and have a safe and happy Easter weekend.

Guest DJ Set 3-21-08

Posted at 10:29 PM on March 21, 2008 by Steve Seel

The Balance series frorm EQ Recordings is one that Mark Wheat has featured before on the Friday Night DJ set. This time we're going to dip into one featuring a mix by Jimmy Van M.

Born in Belguim, he got his career start in Orlando FL, making his name playing gigs at Orlando's Beacham Theater, alongside other pioneering American trance DJs such as Kimball Collins. Orlando proved a pretty fertile ground for him, being an area pretty supportive of the trance genre. Eventually he was making all kind of connections, some through the DJ booking agency that he founded there as well ... and one of his big breaks came with his production work on such things as Sasha and Digweed's Communicate album.

Excerpts from "Balance 10.1"
Mixed by Jimmy Van M

Mouse Down - Sexy 4 All
James Figurine -555566688833 (The Field Remix)
Mauro Picotto - Maybe, Maybe Not (Smith & Selway remix)
Umek - Carbon Occasions
Steve T - There Were Lights (Moonbeam remix)

We're Having Much More Fun

Posted at 11:52 AM on March 23, 2008 by Bill DeVille (8 Comments)

Went to the X show last night at the Cabooze. It ended up being the perfect tonic to cure this endless winter...though it's rumored to be spring.

It's amazing to me this band is still around and sound just as vital as when they started out as part of that famed LA punk scene of the late 70's & 80's. They survived John & Exene's divorce & the fact that they never had a hit. Never mind the fact they haven't recorded new material since 1993. This is a band that seems to relish its place in music history as pioneers of their own unique blend of punk rock & American roots music.

What was so cool last night is the fact that band has no new material to promote yet they passionately played a ninety minute set & seemed to simply have fun doing it. Guitarist Billy Zoom (still sporting the blonde pompadour) did his typical mugging it up for the crowd routine while DJ Bonebrake wildly worked the drum kit. Though divorced, Exene & John vocals were tight as ever. X reeled off most of best stuff including: "White Girl," "We're Desperate," "We're Having Much More Fun," & "Hungry Wolf." The best moment was the 1983 Reagonomics anthem, "New World," featuring Zoom's finest Chuck Berry licks.

X seems to be playing for the love & the fun of it. It showed! John Doe promised, "we'll see you again soon." I sure hope so!

"My 3 Songs" for Monday

Posted at 1:24 PM on March 24, 2008 by Steve Seel (2 Comments)

With the oscars a not-too-distant memory yet a few weeks ago, Jeremy Olson of Cannon Falls MN writes, "I just wanted to pay tribute to Oscar nominated songs that didn't make me cringe." Here's to that, Jeremy. I mean, they're not always terrible, as the following demonstrate. What hurts is when good songs lose ... to pitiful ones. The first is a pretty perfect example of such a tragedy.

1) Elliott Smith, "Miss Misery" (Good Will Hunting)
2) Aimee Mann, "Save Me" (Magnolia)
3) Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, "Falling Slowly" (Once)

Do you remember what Elliott lost to? That's right: "My Heart Will Go On." Now, it's hard to imagine anthing overcoming the juggernaut of that song that year, sadly. But seriously, the memory of Elliott up there in his ill-fitting white tux, looking terrified and so out of place still breaks my heart. But actually, it warms it at the same time -- being that it is a reminder of how a troubled genius with a preternatural gift for song and a whispery, vulnerable voice that offered a big fat "no" to the prevailing whomp and bombast of the day could somehow still inflitrate the glossy, plastic machine of Hollywood through the sheer audacity of music so lovely that it simply couldn't help but reverberate and connect with people, and in turn, with the nominating members of the Academy. Now that's a nice thing to have as part of your legacy, among other things.

The Aimee Mann nod was quite nice at the time too, since it's easy to forget now, but Aimee was at an extremely critical crossroads in her career at that moment; essentially, Paul Thomas Anderson's decision to essentially build half of Magnolia itself around her music was in no small way a love letter to Aimee, an artist who had been snubbed herself by the industry and record labels for so long that she seemed all but destined for retirement. Nice how that turned out, eh?

Finally, Marketa Irglova and Glen Hansard's win is still pretty fresh in our minds -- as is Marketa's premature booting from the stage by a gun-jumping pit orchestra. But thanks be to Jon Stewart for setting that one right.

Thanks Jeremy! Terrific set.

"My 3 Songs" for Tuesday

Posted at 1:23 PM on March 25, 2008 by Steve Seel

I love seeing when people discover some music that their parents also dig - mostly because this was nigh unheard of between me and my folks, save for some classical music smatterings (I mean, you try listening to two minutes of a "Gaither Homecoming" CD and see how far you get).

Anyway, Blythe Staley of Mpls writes, "Because my mom's coming to visit me in MN from Idaho and I'm excited to see her! I'm in charge of her iPod, so whenever she visits, we do a little music exchange. These three songs are three of our shared favorites."

1) Simon & Garfunkel, "Only Living Boy in New York"
2) Kasey Chambers, "Pony"
3) Andrew Bird, "Skin Is, My"

If your mom digs Andrew Bird, Blythe, you've got one cool mom.

Facemelter Episode 12: Slash

Posted at 2:10 PM on March 25, 2008 by Brett Baldwin (1 Comments)

Slash's life-story lives up to — or exceeds — the expectations for such a larger-than-life guitarist. Here's a sample of fascinating facts about the guitarist formerly known as Saul Hudson.

  • His father is Anthony Hudson, album cover designer for Geffen Records, including Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark.

  • His mother is clothing designer Ola Hudson. Her work includes costumes for David Bowie in The Man Who Fell to Earth.

  • In Slash, the autobiography of Slash, by Slash, the former Guns N' Roses guitarist credited Seymour Cassel with giving him the nickname "Slash" because he was always on the go and never sitting still.

  • Slash and Steven Adler (G n' R Drummer from '85 –'90) both failed auditions to join 80s Hair Metal band Poison.

And it makes me wonder: does how he grew up seem incredible because of who he ended up being, or is he an awesome guitar player because of the extraordinary circumstances in which he was raised?

Thank about that for a minute, man.

Dateline, Queretara Mexico: It seems that the latest group of persecuted folks who are being subjected to hate crimes are: emo kids. You read that right. Man, are there no limits to the absurd ways we can come up with to express hate in this world?

Now, I'm just as annoyed with the eye-shadowed, lopsided-haircut-sporting mopeys as the next guy -- and think it's about time for us to move onto the next musico-fashion nexus, please, whatever it may be -- but c'mon.

A Look Inside Andrew Bird's Noggin

Posted at 12:07 PM on March 28, 2008 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

Here's a really cool blog post Andrew Bird wrote for the New York Times. A handful of different singer-songwriters are sharing insights into their process of writing songs, and it looks like it will be a really fascinating read looking at the different approaches and accounts of how songs emerge and congeal in different artists' minds.

Just one more thing that gets me fired up to see Mr. Bird on June 21st at Rock the Garden.

Do the Shuffle

Behold the power of sock puppetry!

"Let's Stay Together," Al Green
Yeah, you've heard it a million times, but have you ever heard a couple of sock puppets do it?

"I.C.B.," New Order
This is a song from New Order's 1981 debut, Movement. This album doesn't get much respect but I think it's pretty good. Yes, it sounds like Joy Division with lasers but it's still a decent bridge between JD and the sound New Order would perfect on their next album, Power, Corruption & Lies. Here's some live footage from Berlin in '81. It's not the best quality, but still may hold interest for fans.

"Al Bine," Ali Farka Toure
I think this was the first song I heard by Toure. I love the lazy saxophone on it.

"Right Out of Your Hand," Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
Nick Cave rules.

"Everything Man," Talib Kweli
The opening cut from Eardrum has a nice shot out to The Treacherous Three, the group that launched Kool Moe Dee into the hip-hop stratosphere.

"My 3 Songs" for Friday

Posted at 12:48 PM on March 28, 2008 by Steve Seel

Here's a great Friday set, coming in long distance from Bryan Harmelink of Malvern, PA. He says, "They are the perfect way to get pumped up about life without sounding like a cheesy life coach."

1) Stars, "Take Me To The Riot"
2) The New Pornographers, "Use It"
3) Calvin Harris, "The Girls"

Which got me wondering: what music would a cheesy life coach recommend anyway? "Shiny Happy People?" John Tesh? Kitaro? Depends on the coach and the client I guess ...

Guest DJ Set 3-28-08

Posted at 4:02 PM on March 28, 2008 by Mark Wheat

The Winter Music Conference is happening in Miami this wekend. It's the SXSW for the dance music community, the biggest coming together of the worlds best DJ's of the year.
There's an awards show, panels and DJ events in every available cornor of the city
culminating in the Ultra Music Festival

To celebrate I thought we'd feature a classic session from the DJ that has probably done more than any other to promote dance music across the globe through his weekly radio show on the BBC...Pete Tong
He is so famous in the UK that there's a phrase created using his name, based on the idea of cockney ryhming slang; "It's all gone..Pete Tong" meaning, it's all gone wrong. This is tantamount to becoming the embodiment of a Dickens character, your name enshrined in the language in such a way, immortality of a special kind. Unfortunately the phrase was used as the title of a film depicting the life of a DJ. It was too painful for me to watch all the way through, but detailed the amount of partying that is possible to do as a world famous DJ! It struck me looking at the line up for the WMC that a lot of the big name DJs are...getting on a bit! The community has grown old rather gracefully too, not many drug casualties that I know of, correct me if I'm wrong, despite the fact that dance music has often been terminally linked to a drug culture! It is not easy to stay at the top of your career for as long as someone like Pete Tong, and still be respected by your peers and the many aging DJ's deserve some respect for showing that specialising in a hedonistic entertainment business doesn't neccesarily mean burning out fast.
Everything in moderation people!
Have a safe and happy weekend!!

"My 3 Songs" for Monday

Jen Kubiszewski of Mpls writes today, "We love to dance in the office to these Brit bands!"

1) The Fratellis, "Chelsea Dagger"
2) Babyshambles, "You Talk"
3) The Feeling, "Rose'"

Presumably, if we're dancing then one would need a waltzing partner for the Feeling tune. I have to say I'd never heard a song paying tribue to that most maligned of wines before this one.
