"My 3 Songs" for Thursday

Posted at 1:31 PM on January 24, 2008 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

A short-range flashback to last week today: Bobby Nelson writes, "I was at the Bon Iver, Roma Di Luna, Pines shw last week at the Turf Club. It was a great show, so I'd love to relive it in My Three Songs." Happy to oblige, Bobby -- I think a lot of folks who were there feel the same.

1) Roma Di Luna, "Letter to a Young Poet"
2) Bon Iver, "Flume"
3) The Pines, "Moon When the Cherries Turn Black"

By the way, here's our own Lindsay Kimball's report from the show, including links to Flickr photos!

Steve: For those that missed your interview and in-studio performance of Bon Iver...fans should know that in addition to finding the audio on the Current website they can also find video of the in-studio (two of the three songs) on-line at

BTW you did a very nice job with the Bon Iver interview. I will only add something I read in a Boston Globe interview. Justin Vernon mentioned to you he had signed a letter to a friend "bon hiver" and she suggested using it for the name of his project. In the Globe he added he signed the letter Bon (H) iver given it was winter at his cabin but also because of an episode on Northern Exposure where upon the first snow of the season everyone left their houses in Ciecily, Alaska...going to the streets....to hug their nieghbors and greet them with the phrase "Bon Iver" (ie have a good winter). Being from the "land of the wind chill factor"...to quote John Prine...can't we all relate to that?

So the CD is a greeting as well as an assessment of his struggle to cope. It appears he coped well and came to peace. The message is even the dark of winter holds hope and warmth especially when one emerges as he did to find community (in music).

So "Bon (H)iver" to you Steve and to all the good folks who send good music our way. Bon Iver.
