What is Rave music?!
This week the schedule for the Spark Festival was announced and I got excited to see one of my print heroes coming to town, Simon Reynolds. Born in England like me, he wrote for one of my fave mags when I was a teenager Melody Maker. In the early 90's he came over to New York and has since settled here writing for pretty much every major music magazine and writing several books including in '98 what is considered the best history and explanation of what became known as' Rave Culture' called "Generation Ecstasy". It's being updated and re-issued this year and he will be talking about it ;

It got me going through the compilations of various dance music that I have collected trying to find a good representation of what is called Rave. A label out of the UK called Apace put together great collections of different styles of music and do a good job of capturing the essence of a style. Tonight's set is from a box set called Essential Series they did a few years ago, this is on 'Rave Anthems". But they have just put out another set called 'Rave Weekender' which looks cool too.
