Beatles ahead by a head!

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far to the old chestnut of a question...
Who Is The Greatest Band Ever! There have been some very inspiring posts showing the depth of love for music that you have as an audience...er...but Led Zep are losing?!?! The Beatles are ahead, with 'david' doing an awesome job of breaking down why. Honorable mentions go to The Rolling Stones, Clash, Neil Young, Bruce and Massive Attack, thanx to 'Depunked Bridgette' who created her own blog about it!
One of the most eloquent pieces was from 'michael' who suggested U2 and that they may be the last of the bands to develop that could be even considered for this title, making them the greatest ever almost by default, interesting. Thanks to Greg Tennant too for trying to derail the discussion almost immediately (he was the second post) with..."to hell with deciding whos number one, it shouldn't matter,it's a none issue". I will feature some of these comments on the air Thursday night between 8-9pm and play some corresponding tracks.

Ok. so I will chime in. I have to admit that I tend to agree with Greg about this question. Even though, I am always a sucker for this type of discussion. See.. There are probably a hundred bands I like more than I like Led Zeppelin. There are probably a hundred bands I like more than I like The Beatles. But I probably would never call them the Greatest Band Ever. I understand/appreciate/agree with the importance of these two bands and agree that they are great. Many of the bands on my list wouldn't exist without these bands... great. But they also have a distinct advantage over bands coming out today. The Beatles and Led Zep wouldn't be able to happen today. At least not in the same capacity. Same with U2 and most of the other bands mentioned previously in all these postings. They might exist but they wouldn't be getting near the exposure they got back in the day. Thus their influence wouldn't be as far reaching. Of course, look at the Velvet Underground. Not much exposure back in the day... But their far-reaching influence took years and years to come to fruition. Am I making any sense here? Gun to my head; I would name the Beatles as the greatest. Radiohead right on their heels.

You'd have to be worst then an atheist (which I am) to not love the Beetles, but I've always thought the better band over the
Beetles and Zeppelin is the Rolling Stones. They should be considered the greatest ever, and locally and for me personally the most important band has been and may always be the Replacements. All hail the 'Mats.

I can't pick just one. That's just not how music is.

But as long as we're having this discussion, I'll put in a plug for Pink Floyd as a great rock & roll band. For the most part, they use the standard forms of rock & roll (4/4 beats, blues scales) and the standard instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, singer), with a few quirks and sound effects added in, yet their music sounds like no one else's.
