Steven Steingruebl of St. Paul says of his tunes today, "they make me want to drop everything and dance."
1) Beirut, "Nantes"
2) The Comas, "Last Transmission"
3) Yo La Tengo, "Mr. Tough"
What's cool about those selections is the different kinds of dancing they represent. While the Beirut tune isn't a waltz (it's in 4/4, not 3/4) it does have a interestingly antiquated, stop-start kind of lope about it -- a subtle variation on straight 4 -- that makes me wonder if there isn't a corresponding dance that would go well with it. I'm not really the "rhythm names" expert (a partial explanation for my "c-minus drummer" status?), but maybe somebody out there is.
Anyway, thanks Steven for a great set (and some food for thought)!
