Steven Steingruebl of St. Paul says of his tunes today, "they make me want to drop everything and dance."
1) Beirut, "Nantes"
2) The Comas, "Last Transmission"
3) Yo La Tengo, "Mr. Tough"
What's cool about those selections is the different kinds of dancing they represent. While the Beirut tune isn't a waltz (it's in 4/4, not 3/4) it does have a interestingly antiquated, stop-start kind of lope about it -- a subtle variation on straight 4 -- that makes me wonder if there isn't a corresponding dance that would go well with it. I'm not really the "rhythm names" expert (a partial explanation for my "c-minus drummer" status?), but maybe somebody out there is.
Anyway, thanks Steven for a great set (and some food for thought)!

Hope you all have a very safe and happy Thanksgiving!
This holiday usually involves some driving or flying and I was wondering if you have any plans, musically, for the trip? Do you make a playlist of your fave tunes of the year? Perhaps you could take a fave album and re-review it like Mac's 'Sandinista' project? Two friends told me of listening to one song, Archie Bell's "Tighten Up!" over and over again for 3 straight hours while driving through Kansas...road trips can make you do strange things!
Or are there any family tradition tunes that you all listen to during dinner? If it's Arlo Guthrie's "Alice's Restaurant" you might be interested in this.
