Today's Song for Red - Verb! That's What's Happenin!

There's something extremely satisfying about sharing your childhood memories with your own children in a very real way. And if I can squeeze in some knowledge, well, then, nobody's a loser! Am I right parents?

We got the "Schoolhouse Rock" DVD in the mail the other day and I felt like I was shot back through time. So, I took Red with me. I was amazed that, after all these years, I could still remember the lyrics. But that was the whole point, wasn't it? It's a lot easier to recall the multiplication table when there's a catchy tune to remind you what eight times eight is.

I particularly enjoyed Grammar Rock. You had nouns, adjectives, and conjunctions. And who could ever forget Verb? That song absolutely kills! It had to be fast and funky. It's a verb, for crying out loud!

Lurve the schoolhouse rock!

"Three is a Magic Number" is a lovely song, even by adult standards. I also have really fond memories of "Figure Eight", "Nouns", and "Conjunction Junction". In fact, I own a Conjunction Junction tee shirt (hooking up words, and phrases and clauses...).

Ah. Growing up in the seventies.

You know why I think these songs were so memorable? Because, unlike most music manufactured for children, they were actually quality songs! They're well written, full of hooks, and irresistible and infectious.

According to this site the music was written by "Bob Dorough, a Texas jazz musician with a knack for infectious grooves", who relished the job.

Hats off to you, Mr. Dorough. You taught grammar and math painlessly to an entire generation of school children. Quite an accomplishment

Let us not forget, that Blossom Dearie, whom I didn't know also was a well-known jazz singer in her own right, also is on the Verve Remix collection. Vol. 2 or Vol. 3, I can't remember which one off the top of my head at the moment.

Also, my old college roommate, happened to do a gig with Jack Sheldon, the trumpet player and singer of "Conjunction Junction" and such songs and Mr. Sheldon informed him that he couldn't do a gig afterwards without singing that song.

And, lastly, I had to break out the Schoolhouse Rock CD's and pay "Verb" since I missed it earlier. Shortly before, we had been at Cub Foods and had seen an ad for The Gap, and there was a girl with a T-shirt that said "Inspire(Red)" and I commented to the Mrs. that that was something that Tone Lope should end up buying for Red.
