I have to gush for a moment about Spoon. I've been sort of rabidly, nerdily following their career (okay, I've been stalking them) since A Series of Sneaks. And it didn't hurt that I'm from south Texas, so I had pretty regular access to them live. In essence, I've been seeing these guys play live for the last ten years or more. Ten years! I don't think I've kept friends that long!
After seeing them play at First Ave last night, I'm relieved--and not surprised--to see that they've still got it. They're as clean and tight and muscular live as they were back when there was only three of them, and I'd see them huddled together on a little stage at Emo's in Austin, or Taco Land in San Antone. As David, our Assistant Music Director puts it (and I paraphrase), we've grown up with Spoon and they've grown up with us. And the image of adulthood they convey is downright sexy. It seems to compell us to trade in our tattered band shirts for fitted shirts. And that they've grown up with me means that--though I may enjoy listening to Spoon's old stuff--there's no nostalgia. They keep making great music, which means their music reminds me of the present as much as my twenties, and it conjures up recent memories of my new life in Minnesota as much as my old home back in Texas. There's something about them that certainly taps into nostalgia, but they're too modern to ever feel dated.
Did you miss the show last night? Are you going tonight? Either way--why don't you tune in to The Current tonight at 5? Spoon's gonna be dropping by our studio to chat with Mary Lucia. I've promised to behave myself ... do you think a gift basket with Lone Star, Big Red, and tacos is over the top?
Oh, and if you miss the in-studio at 5--don't worry--it'll be archived soon here. And you can also hear them here.
And--take it from me--if you ever have the opportunity to walk Britt Daniels to the vending machines at your work, do not point out that you are both wearning the same sneakers. It's just dorky.
GA! Just got back from the show and yeah - what you said. Phenomenal. It was my first Spoon show but definitely won't be my last.
Duly noted on the shoe comment. I'm just glad to hear the man eats.
Also, I found it a plus to be able to see Britt's legs through out the concert. They are in constant motion - whether they're keeping time, hot-footing it or kicking out an exclamation mark. Love it.
I tried to offer him real food, but he wanted Pop Tarts.
Apparently Britt and I have something in common -- Pop Tarts are a staple of my overnight shifts.
And from the same vending machine, no less?
