Some sunny songs for an overcast day today; Caleb Durenberger of Apple Valley offers an "upbeat set, because frankly, life is too short to listen to sad music."
1) Halloween Alaska, "I Can't Live Without My Radio"
2) Tahiti 80, "Here Comes..."
3) Stevie Wonder, "Uptight Everything's Alright"

Apple just announced that they're going to offer DRM-free MP3s at the same price as their regular MP3s on iTunes: $.99 (DRM = "Digital Rights Management" -- the system wherein the seller imposes restrictions on what you can and can't do with the MP3 that you bought). It doesn't appear to be the complete iTunes catalog just yet -- just stuff offered through one massive label, EMI, and a few smaller ones including a few of particular interest to Current listeners, such as Sub Pop and Beggars Group. That's a good start.
Farhad Manjoo at Salon.com has some thoughts on all of this at his Machinist blog (you may have to watch an ad first if you're not a subscriber), where he traces the trajectory of the DRM-free MP3, from Apple to Amazon and back again.
Was this inevitable? Do you care? One thing's for sure: as Manjoo demonstrates, it's another example of the free market forcing a change.

Listening back to this session tonight, it strikes me that Josh has a great way with words and came out with some very interesting quotes. Of course his myspace page is one way to keep up with him, but kudos to one of my fave mags, Paste, for posting his creative tour blog too.

The CMJ Music Marathon started yesterday in NYC, our Music Director Melanie is there soaking up as much music as possible and leading a panel...that's right it's not just rock 'n roll there is some serious discussion about 'issues' facing us in the music industry. It's perhaps the biggest gathering of its kind of the year and also features a cool film section, plan ahead with what is shown there and get ready to see the buzz bands that come out of there!

Played the new Mark Knopfler earlier then found this, proving how big his band Dire Straits used to be!! In 1987, The Nescafe UK student 'All Time Top 50' album chart was published; voted in at No.3, 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd, No. 2, 'The Joshua Tree' U2 and No. 1, Dire Straits 'Brothers In Arms', who also had three other albums in the Top 20.
