The long intro

Steve Seel is playing Sonic Youth's "Pink Stream" right now. How long do they play before Thurston starts singing? I love that they can go that long, sound so cool, and then...Thurston says something like "I just come by to run you over."

What songs do you like that have long instrumental intros? Which ones do you hate?

A few that jumped to mind (these impromptu exercises are good).

U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name" might not be the best or the greatest, but it kind of wrote the book on long instrumental intros.

Interpol's "Untitled", just because it's so cool.

I'm not enough of a proghead or classic rock guru to come up with any others off the top of my head. Someone else's will be a lot better.

I was also going to say "Push", one of my favorites as well.. In fact, the Cure is pretty famous for long intros... sometimes even going through the whole cycle of the song instrumentally before the vocals start. I know there are tons of other long-introed songs that i love but none are coming to mind right now. Maybe "Step into the Light" by Archers of Loaf.(?) I seem to remember it having a really nice long intro before it breaks down to just drums then a bright guitar chord and Eric Bachman's creaky voice singing, "Step into the Light/So tired of being in the darkness all alone..."

Big question, but one comes to mind because I was listening to it on the bus this morning: Electrelane's "The Valleys." That long intro allows the choral stuff to kind of sneak up on you.

I don't know what you consider long, but two of my favorites are John Mellencamp - I Need A Lover and Boston - Foreplay/Longtime... Those are the only two I can think of, and I actually found this because I was trying to find more :)
