Good deeds to do

Posted at 3:58 PM on September 21, 2007 by Christina Schmitt

Once again, there's a ton of local shows going on this weekend plus a chance to do a good deed on Sunday night.

Tonight and tomorrow is the first-ever Minnesota Music Festival on Harriet Island in St. Paul. Brother Ali, Soul Asylum and more.

Also tonight at First Avenue is the 9th annual Twin Town High CD release party with Mark Mallman, Seymore Saves the World, Ice Palace, ZibraZibra and MC/VL.

Get down to the Triple Rock Social Club early on Saturday, Sept. 22, 9 p.m. for Pets. (If you find a link to Pets Web site/MySpace page, please post it to our comments. I think it's Ungoogleable. Thanks.)

Wouldn't you know I only caught Pets for the first time last weekend, and the Pets and the lead singer, formerly of Melodious Owl, is moving next week to go to Seattle. Pets is a two-piece, sometimes real drums, sometimes drum machine, sometimes real songs -- which sometimes sounds like cool new wave and sometimes, my friend says, sounds like the Butthole Surfers. With headliners Bonde Do Role, the cool Brazilian electronica band.

Also Saturday at First Avenue, a tribute to my "I wish he was my boyfriend from 40 years ago," Leonard Cohen, which could be a really cool show, especially with locals A Dad In Common.

Not to be confused with the Toronto festival, Saturday at 2 p.m. starts the North by Northeast music festival, where the Club Underground folks are moving upstairs to the Spring Street Tavern and out into its parking lot. With Kid Dakota, Ouija Radio and more.

And if you've got one good deed in you this year, make it this: Sunday night is
Transmission LIVE! A Bridge Benefit for Mercedes Gorden. $15 donation. DJ Jake Rudh has been treating us to mod and Brit records for years; his fiance Mercedes Gorden was crushed during the recent I-35W bridge collapse and this is a benefit for her recovery. The Current's Mark Wheat and Cities 97 Brian Oake will host the night. '90s cool band Ocean Blue will reunite, and play alongside Tapes 'n Tapes, the Deaths, and the Melismatics.
