A couple of weeks ago Red told me she wanted to see Hairspray. More than likely because this guy is in it. I considered my options, not wanting to sit through 90 minutes of John Travolta in drag, and came up with a suitable compromise.
Two days later, we received Hairspray in the mail. When she asked me what was so special about this version, I said, Because this guy is in it."
In the John Waters library, Hairspray is one of the few films safe for tender eyes and minds. In fact, for a young person who is becoming conscious of racial injustice, I would put Hairspray on a required viewing list.
Today's SFR is "A Town Without Pity" by Gene Pitney, who died earlier this year.
