I just rode my bike through my neighborhood, checking out the block parties and listening to Mary and Mark on my headphones. It's become my favorite thing to do on the first Tuesday of August. I was so thrilled to see so many parties happening; seems like every other street was blocked off and kids were playing in sprinklers, the smell of charred food was everywhere, and I swear I saw what looked suspiciously like people shaking hands and introducing themselves to each other. I hope you got out and did something to remind yourself why you like living in your community and why it's important to keep it safe and strong. Anyone have any good anecdotes? Make a new friend? Find out your old boyfriend's sister's yoga instructor lives next door?
One note - last year for the Saturday pre-NNO event it was about 95 degrees and it poured rain on National Night Out proper. The reverse was true this year. Gotta love August.
Ah Ali, you paint a nice picture of last night.
My neighborhood didn't convene and I didn't realize it until the 5th or 6th, so it simply didn't happen this year.
Turned out to be a quiet evening for me. Spent some time chatting with a few neighbors on the bordering blocks (oh, they hosted events, & nice ones too) and also stopped in at a couple local shops (putting the neighbor in neighborhood shops!) but that was it. That was all.
After the past week I was just beat and couldn't even summon up the energy to grill.
Ultimately I think not every night needs to be National Night Out, but certain aspects can be worked into our daily schedules. I don't mind waving people over the fence when the coals are hot, or putting a pause on lawn work to talk with the alley-friends. Even catching the gossip is good - it helps to know who is out of town (keep an eye on their place!) or who isn't feeling well (get out the mower and keep their lawn neat!)
