Movies opening this weekend

"The Bourne Identity" opens this weekend. It's a relentless chase. It's fun. It's a good revenge flick. In the end, it doesn't feel all that different than "The Bourne Supremacy." Jason Bourne travels the world trying to discover his true identity and along the way he beats up or kills a number of people. But that basic plot hadn't worn out it's welcome for me since the movie is in the hands of director Paul Greengrass. I was expecting to enjoy it and I did.

The movie that opens today that surprised me more is "Hot Rod." A comedy starring Andy Samberg, best known from "Saturday Night Live." As comedy, it's not on the level of "Knocked Up," but it's not "Corky Ramono" either. Samberg plays a man-child who performs silly back yard stunts for his friends. When his stepfather falls ill he comes up with a scheme to raise money for surgery. The movie kind of works. It's made by Samberg's cohorts with whom he made the short films "D*** in a Box" and "Lazy Sunday," and usually it seems more like a string of youtube-ready shorts than a film. It's actually kind of sweet, the stunts are goofy fun and you know if you wait during the lulls that the guys will come up with a another great five minute sequence. I have to say, if I were a twelve year old boy, I would rush to see this. And if I were the parent of a 12 year old, I wouldn't dread it if I had to accompany them to the movie.

The best scene of the film features John Farnham's "You're the Voice." Does anyone else remember this song? And how could hearing this song for the first time in 21 years bring me such pleasure?

Stephanie you asked the question "why hearing John Farnham sing You're the Voice for the first time in 21 years brings you such pleasure?" The answer to that one is easy. John Farnham has been bringing Australia "pleasure" for 40 years this year. Thankfully, You're the Voice enabled John to showcase his incredible vocal ability and enormous talent to the rest of the world. Whispering Jack, the album which You're the Voice was lifted from, is still the HIGHEST SELLING AUSTRALIAN ALBUM, some 20 years later. I don't find it odd at all that hearing John sing again after 21years can have that effect on you. I listen to him everyday and he gives me enormous pleasure too !

Stephanie, perhaps the answer to your question lies in John’s incredible voice. It has never ceased to amaze me in 40 years. John is THE most incredible singer/entertainer and just hearing his voice is enough to give pleasure – every single day of my life!

As much as I loved Lazy Sunday and D*#% in a Box, I just don't think Andy Samberg is as funny as he thinks he is. Just me...
Instead of Hot Rod, I'm looking forward to Superbad with Jonah Hill and Michael Cera (who was great in Arrested Development!) Seth Rogen's in that, too.
Hooray for the "normal" looking leading man!

We're looking forward for Superbad to come out too. Seth Rogan rocks, not only as an actor, but as a writer too.
