I'm sure there are reasons for this, but why is the awesome Sound Unseen Festival being held in the middle of the State Fair? So much to do. Tonight's fest movie, "You're Gonna Miss Me," is a documentary about Roky Erickson from the 13th Floor Elevators. City Pages says the doc doesn't measure up to “The Devil and Daniel Johnson," another movie about a mad music savant. Could be, but I still plan on checking it out. If you miss it, you can catch filmmaker Kevin McAlester talking about the life and career of Roky Erickson on this week's Sound Opinions (Sat. at 9 a.m. on The Current).
Zzzzz…wha? Oh, also screening this weekend: "Girls Rock," a doc about girls in an Oregon rock ‘n' roll camp. I have not seen this film. Sarah Askari at City Pages says it's cool, and I'm sure it's well done and inspirational. But personally, after years of supporting the riot grrl community, I want to be done with the topic already. Aren't we on our fourth wave of feminism? Do girls really need Hello Kitty guitars to get out there and rip it up? I say get a tattoo, a guitar under $300, and god bless.
These days I'm more into discussing the genius of lyrics like, “Sometimes a pony gets depressed." You will probably find Current DJ Jacquie Fuller and other poets at the screening of Silver Jew -- the story of the Silver Jews tour.
Here's a conundrum felt by people sitting on the patio of 331 Club in NE Minneapolis recently – what to do this Saturday, August 25? Do you spend the $$ for either the Helmet/Melvins show in the downtown Grumpy's parking lot; the Queens of the Stone Age show at First Avenue; or go down to see the Subhumans play at the Triple Rock? I'll be at the Melvins show. Where will you be?
Oh yeah, and there's this little thing going on called the Minnesota State Fair…and a shameless 89.3 The Current plug. Our DJs will be down there all weekend at the MPR Booth—including a live broadcast of Radio Free Current Saturday night with host Jill Riley. Get the full schedule here: MPR at the State Fair.
89.3 The Current fans will most likely be at the Grandstand Sunday night for the Fountains of Wayne /Suicide Commandos, an unusual pairing that somehow makes sense and could easily feel at home on The Current airwaves. The show is FREE.

The planets are alligned to make our world seem a little too stressful right now, and as we approach the end of summer...how can that be?!?!...let's sit back and chill out for a while at 10pm tonight after the craziness that is the Fair;
Tonight we indulge in my favourite style of music to create the perfect ambience, some call it 'down-beat', 'lounge' or 'chill out', at cafe abstrait it's known as 'couch culture'. Created in 1996 by Frenchman Raphael Marionneau, in Hamburg Germany, it was a weekly club, a radio show and still a label with compilation cds and dvds that can make your couch into the coolest club!
These are the tracks we played from their mix "relaxation is total peace" released in 2001;
- le wax 'the end?'
- millena nova 'so beautiful'
- fenomenom 'pacific memories'
- lemon jelly 'his majesty king raam'
- bluetonic world 'beyond the universe - code 2'
- exxon yazz 'central king'
