"My 3 Songs" for Friday

Posted at 12:45 PM on July 20, 2007 by Steve Seel (96 Comments)

It's a "classic country set" today, "tied together by names: two Williams and two Hanks. It doesn't get any simpler, and doesn't get any better," says Howard Holmes of Minnetonka (Howard's comments about the songs are in parentheses below).

1) Hank Williams, "Kaw-Liga" ("If we've become so p.c. that we can't play one of the classic country tunes ... then we're done as a society")
2) Don Williams, "It Must Be Love" ("one of the first 'outlaws' to make ballads cool again in country music")
3) Hank Snow, "I've Been Everywhere" ("the quintessential 'rambling' tune from the classic country era. Now being ripped off by commercials on TV")

Thanks Howard -- this was a very refreshing set. Admittedly, the Don Williams tune was a bit of an astringent for me -- most commercial country newer than, say, 1970 usually puts me into a bit of an aural seizure (and at least one caller and one e-mailer agreed!) -- but it was cool to be rocked out of my comfort zone for a moment. Hey, isn't that part of what we're doing here, anyway?
