We kept saying all night, "I'll believe it when I See it.." but the overambitious Prince finally strolled out on stage around 3AM as the the overstuffed First Avenue crowd roared with glee practically drowning out the band who were chugging out the opening groove to "3121".
With the tightest band I have ever seen on that stage, Prince delivered a myriad of funk, blues and New Orleans style jazz very much wearing out the tired and hot crowd of believers.
The show peaked when Larry Graham and Wendy Melvoin(who I mistook for a second as Paul Westerberg) joined the band and tore through an extended medley of Sly and the Family Stone tunes.
After jamming on a hyperspeed version of "Alphabet Street", the band(which included Sheila E.), galloped offstage giving everyone a bit of breather.
The show ended a bit anti-climatically as Prince came out by himself to tell the crowd the fuzz were shutting things down.
Regardless, it was a ton of fun to see Prince back home in the place where it all started for him!
