'Song for Red," June 2, 2007 - "You Hold Me Hypnotized"

I think a caterpillar may be setting up shop in our front yard. Red is excited and checks on its progress regularly.

Today's SFR is The Cure's "The Caterpillar," from their most peculiar album, 1984's The Top.

A big Thank You to you, Tony!! This was The Cure album that had just come out when I first decided to buy a Cure album. I was 13 (maybe 14). It was my introduction to the band (except for "Let's Go to Bed" which MTV played quite a bit back when they actually played music and good music, too.) They immediately became MY band. In fact, I remember going home and putting the record on while I cleaned my room. It was a hot summer day and when "Give Me It" came on with the line "This room's so hot/This room's so !@#$ing hot!!' I felt like I was being spoken to directly... An acquaintance of mine who worked at a record/head shop in my town (eau claire) was going to get me a ticket to their show for The Top tour at first avenue! but it turned out to be a 21+ show(or so he told me). I was bummed. it would have been my first 1st ave show!!...anyway.. the album was basically a Robert Smith solo album... Lol plays some on it and Andy Anderson plays drums but it was pretty much just Robert working it all out....that may be why it is arguably their "most peculiar" album.... My favorite song is probably Bananafishbones or Piggy in the Mirror or Birdmad Girl or Dressing Up....but The Caterpillar is great too.. especially given the situation. thanks again.

Thanks for the great Cure memory, Wells. A friend of mine turned me on to the Cure my junior year of high school in 84-85. The Head on the Door was my first Cure purchase, and for a little while I thought I could be the first Puerto Rican Robert Smith! Fortunately, pictures from that time have long ago "disappeared."

I still think alot of the Cure's discography holds up. Hey, this could be a job for Mac Wilson! Rank your favorite Cure albums. I like:

Listening to the Cure in the mid-80's was perfect for an angst-ridden teenager like me.

I meant to rank my top 3:

1. The Head on the Door.
2. Boys Don't Cry
3. Seventeen Seconds.

my top 5:

The Head on the Door

Pornography

the order is always shuffling... but this is pretty much it..

I got into the Cure post angsty teen years, but still love them. Got to see them at UC Berkeley at the Greek Theater for the "Head on the Door" tour. Nothing like sitting amongst a sea of Goths on a warm Saturday night.

Top 3:
Faith
Head on the Door
Seventeen Seconds.

I gave up on them after Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. That album blew
