If, like me, you find yourself unable to travel to one of the many festivals happening this year, check out the DVD "Coachella" which does a good job of making you feel like you're there, tripping around the grounds catching short snippets of sets from Belle & Sebastian, Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire and many more. Unfortunately the interviews are not as good as I'd hoped,
but the sound and vision is cool.
And a few weeks ago on this blog there was an impassioned discussion about Jeff Buckley, well you can find out about his roots from a new DVD about his father Tim Buckley. "My Fleeting House" collects a lot of his TV performances that have never been seen before and thanks to local film and video producer Rick Fuller, I got to do a tiny voice part for it!
I've read three good reviews in magazines from both sides of the pond and the Popmatters guys liked it too.
Got any fave DVD suggestions for these hot summer nights?
Hey there Mr. Wheat. I think it's two years old now, but Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" DVD is a keeper. Plays a few songs you don't normally hear live, "Old King" and a spooky rendition of "The Old Laughing Lady". Neil's a bit wordy about some of the songs, but it's nice if you're not too familiar with the guy or the tunes. It's not "Rust Never Sleeps," but still a pleasurable film.
The Pixies Live from Newport is a fun show, and unusual for such crunchy electric rockers. They are a funny foursome, too, which is on display on this DVD.
Tony had a nice post a few weeks back about Stop Making Sense. I just recently picked up (finally) The Last Waltz on DVD -- now all I need to do is find an audiophile with the best stereo system imaginable and go watch it at their place.
Highly recommend The Last Waltz as well! Also, there is a great Flogging Molly DVD out there when you need to get out your agressions.
Johnny Cash live on Austin City Limits is a classic too.
I think I mentioned some of these in the previous blog incarnation, but what the heck:
Ramones - End of the Century
Sex Pistols - The Filth and the Fury
Klaus Nomi - The Nomi Song
The Tomorrow Show with Tom Snyder: Punk (has interviews and/or performances by Elvis Costello, The Jam, Iggy Pop, Plasmatics, Patti Smith, Joan Jett, and others)
New York Doll - The story of Arthur "Killer" Kane's life and ultimately last show with the Dolls in 2004 before he died
Dig! - the feud between Dandy Warhols and Brian Jonestown Massacre
Not on DVD, but shows up on VH1 Classics every once in a while:
Urgh! A Music War - collection of live perfomances by punk and new wave artists from about 1978-80 something. Only one song per artist, except the Police. Includes Devo, Wall of Voodoo, Toyah Wilcox, Gary Numan, Spizzenergi, X, Dead Kennedys, John Cooper Clarke, Go-Gos, Klaus Nomi, Burning Spear, UB-40, OMD, Oingo Boingo, and many others.
And for fun, The Rutles: All You Need is Cash
Okonokos -My Morning Jacket. awesome set awesome sound. great chemistry.
The Fearless Freaks, of course.
The latest live Cure DVD (Festival) is really good. Porl is back in the band and they are playing just as a four piece, totally stripped down. "Play For Today" is a highlight... The audience sings the keyboard part without even being prompted...
