Here's some local music highlights for the weekend...

Friday night, tonight, looks like a good time to see a legend for FREE. Bob Mould is headlining the Uptown Pride Block Party tonight, playing outside the Bryant Lake Bowl in Minneapolis. He's set to go on sometime around 8-ish. And don't miss glammy opener Venus DeMars (formerly of All The Pretty Horses).

If you didn't see Desdamona, local hip hop songstress, wooing folks standing near the dress rack at Urban Outfitters last weekend, tonight is her CD release party at the Fine Line Music Cafe. Listen to Desdamona on The Current's The Local Show (scroll down to the 06/03/07 edition).

Saturday night is White Light Riot's CD release show, with the Alarmists and Villains Verona at the Fine Line Music Cafe.

Also Saturday night at the Triple Rock is A Whisper in the Noise, self described as "orchestral garage rock." I would add "moody darkness, with records produced by Steve Albini." Word is AWITN will be touring with Australian punk/surf rockers Radio Birdman this fall on the East Coast. BTW, Radio Birdman will be playing the Triple Rock on July 12, and I will definitely be at that show.

Sunday night at the Turf Club, longtime slam scenesters Paul Dickinson and Laura Brandenburg are hosting the Riot Act Reading series. Laurie Lindeen, former lead singer of Zuzu's Petals, author of "Petal Pushers," and star of last weekend's Current Fakebook event, will read. Listen to a broadcast of The Current Fakebook with Laurie Lindeen on The Current this Sunday night at 6 p.m.

But if you would rather get some Japanese-infused noise art rock in your Sunday night, Melt Banana returns to The 7th Street Entry with the always awesome Birthday Suits.

Resident of Berlin and head of BPitch Control records she has just put together another in the excellent series from the club and label Fabric in London "fabric34". For some reason though they send us exclusive mixes for the radio they don't share any of the tracks that are on the cd, but the quality is very similar. Here's what you heard tonight;

01 Junior Boys / Like A Child (Carl Craig Remix)
02 Theo Parrish / Falling Up
03 Future Beat Investigators / Lotus
04 Joris Voorn / When It Was Day We Made it Night
05 Pep Gaya / Dragon Soup (Lod Remix)
06 Emptyset / Acuphase
07 Telepopmusik / Love Can Damage Your Self
(Abicah Soul & Dennis Ferrer Remix)

This mix is not available for sale but here's where you can buy her other stuff locally.
