'My 3 Songs" for Monday

Posted at 1:59 PM on June 18, 2007 by Steve Seel

For today's set, Jeffrey Rice of Fridley says, "These songs have little or no continuity and I can't tie them together at all. But they all still rock." Got that right, Jeffrey.

1) The Black Keys, "Keep Your Hands Off Her"
2) Arcade Fire, "Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)"
3) Figurines, "All Night"

Do the Shuffle

Posted at 4:10 PM on June 18, 2007 by Jacquie Fuller (11 Comments)

The Onion AV Club has this little thing they do, called "Random Rules." Basically, they get someone famous to put their mp3 player on shuffle, see what comes up, and comment on the songs. And because I am just that egomaniacal, I always find myself fantasizing about the day I'm famous and they ask me to shuffle. Well, I'm done waiting. Here are the first five songs that show up on my player on shuffle (she holds her breath and hopes nothing embarassing shows up):

"Nu Bruises," Superchunk
Not my favorite song on Indoor Living, but I like the album overall. It was the last Superchunk record before Mac McCaughan lost me with that weird falsetto business.

"Window Over the Bay," Vashti Bunyan
I listen to Vashti when I need to feel like the world is an okay place.

"You Singled Me Out," The Mendoza Line
Poppy band from Brooklyn I've always kind of dug. Think they might be disbanded.

"On Parade," Electrelane
First Electrelane song I ever heard. I was living in New Mexico when I bought this album. I was totally won over by the "hoo hoo"s.

"Waiting for the Moon to Rise," Belle & Sebastian
I love the spooky, wistful, retro feel of this song. It makes me wish I were a mod girl in 1960s London, with awesome hair and go-go boots, zooming around on a scooter. One of my favorite B&S tunes.

I've always thought you could tell a lot about a person via this exercise--kind of like examining what's in a person's shopping cart. That said--your turn! What's on your mp3 player? Put it on shuffle and give us the first five songs that show up. And no forwarding to cooler, less incriminating tracks--that's cheating!

Do You Remember The First Time...

Posted at 9:24 PM on June 18, 2007 by Mark Wheat (16 Comments)

you bought an album with your own money and where from?
This is one of the questions Mojo magazine always asks in its version of "Random Rules'.
Tonight I played "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to me)" from Band On The Run, the first Wings release in 1973. That was my first and it was fun to hear it again in celebration of Sir Paul McCartney's birthday, he's 65 now! It was from 'Wheelers' a shop that sold a few albums but specialized in electrical appliances in my home town of King's Lynn, Norfolk, England...yes for all those who STILL think I come from Australia, I don't!

Thanks for all your support during the Fund Drive last week, that was a blast, especially Friday hanging out with Seely and Mary and making our goal with 15 minutes to go. You guys rock !!
