Block party season is upon us, check out the Red Stag party below, plus a lot of cool local shows this weekend, too. Rock!

Friday, June 8
Brother Ali returns from tour tonight to First Ave. and Saturday at the 7th Street Entry with BK One, Toki Wright, Psalm One, Boom Bap Project. Both shows sold out...but, maybe you've got a friend who will give you a ticket? Nice friend. If not, you can hear Brother Ali perform live in-studio on The Current this June 18.

If you do make it down to the Brother Ali show, noteThe Pipettes playing next door at the Entry. Hear the Pipettes this afternoon live in-studio on The Current.

On Saturday, the Red Stag Block Party in NE Minneapolis. 5-10:30 p.m. FREE! Outside, rain or shine. The Red Stag nightclub is the latest venture by Kim Bartman of the Bryant Lake Bowl and Cafe Barbette, so no surprise they'll have organic eats and are planning for a zero waste event. Check out the line up: Low, Black Blondie, Prudence Johnson w/Buffalo Jack & the Plowboys, MC/VL, Chooglin, Wain McFarlane of Ipso Facto, and writers of the Lit 6 Project and Electric Arc Radio.

Also Saturday: Finnegan's Summerfest at the Cabooze with Soul Asylum's Dave Pirner. Who he is playing with? Click here to see what Chris Riemenschneider at the Star Tribune found out (scroll to the bottom of his column).

More Saturday stuff: Wolf Brigade, described on the Triple Rock Web site as "one of Sweden's greatest hardcore groups that will knock you flat on your face!" With two really awesome local hardcore bands, Useless Wooden Toys, and 2 Minute Tantrum. This show is connected in a punk-rock-sort-of-way with another show that's all ages and happening...somewhere...you'll have to find out for yourself...with local bands In Defense and reunion of the Murderers.

And another Saturday show at the Turf Club in celebration of 5th anniversary for local music Web site HowWasTheShow.com. With First Communion Afterparty, The Slats, Jeremy Messersmith, Mouthful of Bees and Estate.

Where are you going to be this weekend?

Do ya love the Techno kids?!

Tonights Guest DJ Set (Every Friday @ 10pm) might not be everyones 'cuppatea' ( I just finished nattering wiv The Pipettes!) It's a very interesting modern minimal techno mix by Marco Carola a young (24) DJ from Napoli, Italy. This is a special promotional radio mix put together by the ever fabulous Fabric label who released his 'fabric 31' set late last year. It flows and ebbs and interlaces beats as if it is a group of computers sitting around in a drum circle making pretty patterns with their musical thoughts, weaving beat patterns as melodies, keeping you guessing as to where it goes next. If you are wondering where to buy this kind of stuff or find out about more artists and shows featuring this style of music you could start at our local South Mpls store Vital Vinyl.
Here's what you heard;
1. Jpls - "Red 20"
2. Gaiser - "Offprint 1.2"
3. Jay La Forge - "Minidiscoslicker"
4. Pedro - "Mitica"
5. Luciano - "The Tracks"
6. Femi Kuti - "Traitors of Africa"
7. Andomat 3000 & Jan - "Entr'acte Music"
8. Daze Maxim - "Simply Driving Gold"
9. Audion - "No Fit State"

Pitchfork has been raving about these guys for a while now and they have some great pictures from Chicago last night. Even though they didn't wear the polka dots, they were very charming and chatty, if you missed the session that we played at 8pm tonight, check the archive!
