Grand old times

Here's a few local music show highlights for the weekend.

Friday, June 1
Drinking with Ian live television taping at First Avenue.

This is an awesome lineup for DWI (a recent City Pages cover story). Don Shelby, WCCO anchorman, takes top billing. Why is Don going to drink with Ian? I don't know. Superhopper is a musical guest, and it's going to be flippin hilarious to see lead singer Kermit take on Ian. Remember, "Eye of the Tiger Applies to Everything." Eleni Mandell will also appear on the show. Hear her this afternoon on The Current. She will also play later on in the 7th Street Entry with Martin Devaney.

Saturday and Sunday is the Red Hot Art festival in Stevens Square in Minneapolis. I always like this small festival in the park -- it's not overwhelming, has an urban feel and you can find some cool, affordable art. And there is music Saturday, 2-8:30 p.m. with Bla Bla Black Sheep, Gerald Prokop, ShugE, Painted Saints, Hangun Man, Chokecherry, and Gay Beast (check out their Web sites. The music is original). Hope it doesn't get rained out.

Sunday, June 3 is that grand old St. Paul tradition of going to the Grand Old Day festival on Grand Ave during the day, and then rolling over for the Turf Club Grand Old Stage that night.

At Grand Old Day, check out the Dixie's Stage, noon-5 p.m. with Tapes'n Tapes, The Alarmists, Grand Idol Winner, The Evening Rig and The Dad in Common (I really dig the Dad in Common). The Turf Club Grand Old Stage features Charlie Parr, Little Man and Mike Gunther.

And on Tuesday, June 5 The Current is teaming up with Yaris, Urban Outfitters, and Free Yr Radio to bring you a free show with Tapes 'n Tapes. This show is free and it's going to be packed. Maybe I'll see you squeezed next to the shoe section.

What are you doing this weekend?

Guest DJ Set 6/1/07 ; DJ ESP

Posted at 10:09 PM on June 1, 2007 by Mark Wheat (2 Comments)

Since he started as our monthly resident, we have enjoyed an ambient mix, straight ahead techno and now...an early electroclash hybrid that he performed live in '02. When Woody McBride is not flying all over the world bringing the variable sounds of DJ ESP to the masses, he likes to hang out in his own neck of the woods with a bunch of like minded peeps at the Amatuer Psychology Convention!

Flaming Huge Festival!

Posted at 10:22 PM on June 1, 2007 by Mark Wheat

Just when I was getting festival overload, thinking that there could not be a bigger, better, badder one, here it is...appropriately named the Monolith Music Festival It's at the Red Rocks Ampitheater, an awesome venue, Colorado in September is nice, and it's got an awesome line up including Flaming Lips, Decemberists and Cloud Cult!! Tickets go on sale tomorrow.
If you go to any of the festivals, drop us an email with your best stories, for all of us who cannot go roadtripping. I ALMOST miss being in the UK, they know how to do them there too.
