Those Casting Agents Must Know, Well, Something

Okay, so it's official, as Barb notes below: Elijah Wood will play Iggy Pop. Cut to: shot of millions of fans in simultaneous head-scratch.

But then, everybody also scratched their heads when it was announced that Michael Keaton would play Batman/Bruce Wayne back in the 80s (I mean, a lot of people were furious about that one, remember?). But it seems to me that that one worked. Don't you think?

So will this one work? (I personally CAN NOT see it.) And if not, who should have been tapped to play Iggy? Here's my vote (and that's assuming he could lose his English accent and adopt Mr. Osterberg's midwestern hick-twang): this guy, who's already bared his chest (and more) onstage.

Frodo Pop? Iggy Baggins? [shrug]

How 'bout if Jake Gyllenhaal dyed his hair and lost, like, 30 lbs? Too handsome?

I'm afraid to do a GIS for Iggy Pop at work (you never know what might pop up). I'll just have to give my blanket answer for these types of questions: Peter Sarsgaard. He can do anything.

Come on Seel, take it easy on the little guy! If Cate Blanchett can play Dylan then surely Elijah Wood can do this.
But, I bet Val Kilmer would have rocked this role if he were 15-20 years younger.

Oh, c'mon! If you think that guy can portray Iggy, then surely Elijah can do it. Elijah has the acting chops to pull it off.

Remember.... Michael Keaton....

Well, for my money (none to front, of course) I'd say Dunst *can* pull off Deborah Harry. No, there's no proof to offer, just instinct. Let's pray there's some good scriptwriting and give Dunst a chance to sharpen the edges.

As for the star attraction... well, Elijah, I worry for ya. Can you imagine trying to portray Iggy Pop? Even if EW isn't a method actor, something from those touch-and-go years is bound to creep through the cracks and stick. You can't give everything you've got to powerful music and not bear a mark, and you can't dive into someone who has been through it and not be a little twitchy.

I agree with most of Ali's observations. I think anonymity can really help make a portrayal work, and all her examples were spot-on. Then of course, Bowie as Warhol in "Basquiat" was pretty flippin' awesome (I thought so, at least). But maybe that's a slightly different case, because that role wasn't the centerpiece of the film, and so could be enjoyed as a slightly comic/unserious turn.

BTW, upon some reflection, I take back my Daniel Radcliffe suggestion. I think it really was just those shirtless (and unsettling) photos of him in "Equus" that made me nominate him (photos that I can't seem to track down anywhere online now). But it would indeed be just as much of a strech as Elijah. So, Laddie, I'm agreeing with you in that sense.

Elijah can play this role! He has a rare talent where he can do any genre. I'm excited that my favorite actor can bend his performances into so many different people. Only a true actor can do that. Elijah gets my vote!
