Songs about dating

Posted at 3:22 PM on May 21, 2007 by Christina Schmitt (31 Comments)

The Zutons's song in rotation on The Current -- " Why Won't You Give Me Your Love?" -- really inspires both pity and concern for the dating bloke in the catchy Brit tune.

What are your favorite songs about the dating experience? Do they give you heart? Do they make you glad you're out of the dating scene or wish you were right back in it? Oh, and don't pick Singles Going Steady (just 'cause).

I'm dating myself by saying so, but Joe Jackson wrote some of the most masterfully cynical songs about dating I have ever heard. In particular I would point out Is She Really Going Out With Him and Fools In Love.

From "Is She Really Going Out With Him"

Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street
From my window Im staring while my coffee grows cold
Look over there! (where? )
Theres a lady that I used to know
Shes married now, or engaged, or something, so I am told

Is she really going out with him?
Is she really gonna take him home tonight?
Is she really going out with him?
cause if my eyes dont deceive me,
Theres something going wrong around here...

From "Fools In Love"

Fools in love, well are there any other kind of lovers?
Fools in love, is there any other kind of pain?
...
Fools in love, are there any creatures more pathetic?
Fools in love, never knowing when theyve lost the game...

Fools in love they think theyre heroes
cause they get to feel no pain
I say fools in love are zeros
I should know, I should know
Because this fools in love again...

Fools in love, gently hold each others hands forever
Fools in love, gently tear each other limb from limb (my all time favorite Joe Jackson line!)

I am just ridiculously angry at myself for never realizing the double meaning behind the title of Singles Going Steady until now. And here I thought it was just a reference to all the band's early singles in one place (hardy har)

Paul Westerberg's 'Dyslexic Heart' is a good one.

How about Puddle of Mudd "She Hates Me"?

Aimee Mann's "Save Me," which really shows what a sad sack I was back in my dating days. My husband did a real public service in marrying me.
