Open window

Posted at 1:36 PM on May 10, 2007 by Christina Schmitt (5 Comments)

Now that the weather is nice and my apartment window is open all the time, I'm hearing a lot more of my neighborhood. Of course that can be a drag, but there's been one bonus thus far: A rockabilly band has started practicing in a garage in the alley and they're pretty good. I love their version of "Baby Please Don't Go."

Have you had any good experiences this spring hearing a song through an open window -- either your window or someone else's, like someone at a stoplight blasting Nas's "Hip Hop Is Dead" on their car stereo?

When I used to live in Texas, a guy across the street from me played the push-button accordion. I never met or saw him, but I'd wake up on Saturday mornings to the sound of him playing. It was lovely. Here in Minneapolis, I mostly hear a lot of reggaeton, which I secretly love anyway.

well, I just hope all those people appreciated my blasting DeVotchka's version of "Venus In Furs" at the stoplight the other day.

Well, I've heard my share of "open window" music from one of my neighbors. Just how many times can a person play "Against The Wind" in one day, anyway?

Frick, I'm quite certain that the people stopped at the light on Hiawatha next to me yesterday were enthralled with the Archie Bronson Outfit, BRMC and Heartless Bastards I was blasting! (all from Auntie's Medley Vol. 3). It sure beats the gangsta rap.

I don't know about that, Auntie. I really love it when rap is playing full boar (or is that bore?), and the speakers are shaking the car. Although I'm sure your car was shaking, too. Makes me want to improve the stereo system in my car, although I think my station wagon might fall apart if I give it too much bass.

If you can feel the car coming down the street for 2 blocks before seeing it, you've got the tunes up too loud. especially if your windows are still rolled up! Tinnitus anyone?

Christina: At least the band rehearsing across the street is good. Imagine if they totally blew chunks. or played "Sweet Home Alabama" 20 times in a row.

One of my old bosses used to hear their upstairs neighbors rehearsing all the time. Good thing it turned out to the the Gear Daddies...
