What shows have all your friends buzzing for the weekend?
My friends have been talking about the Naked Raygun/Dillinger Four Saturday show for months. (I think we bought tickets back in January?) Not only is it cool to see Naked Raygun reunite, but this is the first D4 show in forever. Saturday's all-ages show is sold out-- that's where I will be -- but if you're old enough, tickets remain for Naked Raygun's 21+ show tonight. In related news, D4 is supposed to be releasing a new record this year--the first one in years. Can't wait for the buzz to start about that.
Give it up for St. Paul! Or at least tell me what's up with Fhima's in downtown St. Paul. Just a couple of weeks ago, I heard that Mute Era was DJing at Fhima's on a Saturday night. Now I see Ouija Radio is playing this Saturday an all-ages, FREE show at 10 p.m. If you know what's going on at Fhima's, let me know!
The Ponys are playing tonight at the Entry. You'll be able to hear them play live in-studio on The Current this afternoon.
Tonight is also Electric 6 at First Ave. Tickets are $10 or $1 with comp that you pick up at the Dunn Brothers on University and 6th (between Dinkytown and Surdyks). Send questions about that to More Cowbell.
Jose Gonzalez is playing at the Cedar Cultural Center. I just love that guy. Listen to past Jose Gonzalez in-studio performance on The Current.
Pop, pop, pop. For some local, midwestern and Canadian pop, check out the International Pop Overthrow Fest at The Uptown Bar tonight and Saturday. $5 each night. Lineup features The Radiospares, The Morning After (from Winnipeg), The Lanes, The Nice Outfit (from Milwaukee), The Hard Left, Stingray Green and The Conquerors.
You can also see Stingray Green play across town tonight at the Hexagon Bar for Chris Dorn's Pop Music Festival. FREE. Lineup features Retrofits (Portland, OR), Nice Outfit (Milwaukee), Landing Gear, White Hot Tizzies (Milwaukee, WI), Ten Ton Bridge, Uberscenester (Muncie, IN), and Stingray Green.
Because marching mardi gras bands also count as local music, don't forget the May Day Parade in Powderhorn Park this weekend--you should go if you've never been. It's one of the best things about spring.
And finally, I'm trying really hard to be my friend's guest to Sunday night's Heaven and Hell show (if you don't know, that's the Ronnie James Dio version of Black Sabbath, minus Ozzy). Wish me luck!
What plans do you have for the weekend?
Woops! I forgot a couple of very cool shows...
Tonight's "Midwest Marauders" video premiere and after party, featuring members of Doomtree After Party! w/members of Doomtree, Sims, Cecil Otter, Dessa, Mictlan and Paper Tiger. Doors at 9 p.m./Movie at 10 p.m. $7. 18+. Varsity Theater.
And THE ENGLISH BEAT at the Cabooze tonight. Whew.
By the English Beat you mean Dave Wakeling since he's the only original member in the band, but I am jealous of your D4 tickets.
I went to my first show in 9 months last night! Ben Gibbard & Dave Mazan & Johnathan Rice at First Ave. It was an *extremely* low-key set, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
i got my tix for Heaven and Hell. i am way psyched for this show!
Pert' Near Sandstone have a great new cd out 'Up and Down the River'and to celebrate they're playing at the Cabooze Saturday with The Brass Kings another local band who tug traditional styles of music in interesting ways.

Is where you can find out more about the Fhima's series, which appears to be ending after next weekend, but I highly recommend Ouija Radio too!
