Certain artists seem to spark love/hate feelings amoungst the listeners during the afternoons more than others, I'm no stranger to strong feelings so I can appreciate it.
I'm happy to live in a world in which everyone doesn't love the same things.
But I'm curious to know specifically what is it you dislike about blank artist.. got a Rufus Wainright hater regular listener who schooled me in his feelings.
Personally I'd follow Roofy through the gates of hell, but want to put my eye out with a golf pencil when I hear Kimya Dawson.
I've tried and tried and tried to like Ani DiFranco, but something about her makes me want to do the same, except with one of those little pencils from IKEA, which are essentially golf pencils, but they say IKEA on them. I feel like a bad feminist. I like Kathleen Hannah--does that absolve me?
As you well know thanks to my rants every time you play him, Bright Eyes makes me want to gouge out my ears. Just cheer up - you've gotten out of Nebraska (and good on you for that) and made presumably some number of piles of money. Get the hell over yourself.
More controversially perhaps, Morrissey is in the same category for me. (I guess for it to be controversial, someone would have to care.)
I know, Mary, it's totally weird sometimes what I dig and don't. Admittedly, it can feel arbitrary.
Unlike Mr. Childs, I love Conor Oberst! I think he's one of our finest young lyricists. Let's be clear, though, he's no Dylan. There's only one of those!
And then, when I hear Colin Meloy's voice I wanna scream, "Dude, you're from freakin' Missoula, Montana! Can the faux-vague European accent. It's seriously annoying!" But everybody and their mother just loves The Decemberists.
And then...Neko Case could sing the dictionary and I would be totally enthralled. Go figure.
I gotta say, Jamie T. and Mike Skinner from The Streets make me want to punch things. I love UK artists as much as the next person, but this whole "Bloke-Hop" genre has got to stop.
They sound like cockney Hip Hop versions of the Monkees' Davy Jones singing "On the Day We Fall in Love" 'or "I'll Be True to You".. Yick!
I think I just might have to trademark that phrase.. Bloke-Hop.
i wonder what Fripp-Hop would sound like?
Unfortunately, Bjork's vocal style makes me want to take a sharp ice pick to both of me eardrums. I know everybody who knows anything about music is totally ga-ga in love with her, and intellectualy I know she's a groundbreaker and musical wunderkid, but I have to concede that I will simply *never* like her music. I've tried - really, I have! - but I can't get past those up and down and all-around, seriouosly overblown vocals. I can't actually pierce my eardrums, seeing as I have a high deductible medical plan, I must content myself with sticking my fingers in my ears and loudly exlaiming "LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA" whilst her voice fills the airwaves.
[Ducking from anticipated abuse]
Few bands annoy more than Cake.
ok...is James Blunt in the "im suppose to love" or "im suppose to hate" group...because i despise him. i know i am suppose to like Modest Mouse, but i ain't diggin them...at all.
Thank you Wells. Cake is one of the 5 worst groups in music history; I was ranting about them just last night.
Cake one of the 5 WORST bands of all time? I don't think that's true. What are your standards for bands that "don't suck"? Just curious. We all have our own criteria.
I'd rather listen to pretty much anything before I heard Thom Yorke. I just don't get it.
Yeah I'm kind of in the Bright-Eyes-makes- me-want-puncture-my-eardrum-with-an-icepick category as well. It's interesting because when I caught him at the Vote For Change concert I was impressed by the performance, but every time I hear his voice, I feel like he's doing an Elmer Fudd impersonation.
I dunno if Cake is really worth ranting about so much as they are just lame.
Tone: Yeah, Fripp-Hop as in Robert Fripp. Would be interesting.
what would Prog-Hop sound like? A couple of heavy beats then a 20 minute synth solo?
I like Cake. They're a fun band. Not deep or philisophical, but just plain fun. "Philisophmoric" may be the better term... I should trademark that one too...
Cake may not be the greatest band in the world, but they're far from the worst - certainly above the 50th percentile. Why does music always have to be serious? I think that humor holds just as important a place in music as in daily life. I think of Cake's catalog as cartoons for the ears. Would I want a steady diet of it? Of course not, but a little bit sprinkled in with my heavy "art" music isn't a bad thing.
Speaking of humor, I'm not big on the bloke-hop, but I must admit that I get a kick out of the lyrics from a couple of the Streets' tunes. "When you wasn't famous" cracks me up. Now if I could only figure out who the pop diva ex-girlfriend was...
Bright Eyes is a given. Ever since Mary said something about him, all I hear is warble, warble, warble now. And Bloc Party. Ugh! If I have to listen to his overmelodramatic meandering attempt at music again I don't know what I'll do! Reminds me of the character "Jack" from Will & Grace and how he'd totally overblow his own personality if given the spotlight.
I don't dislike Cake because they are funny. I don't think they are funny at all. I find them smug and irritating.
I hate Bjork. I'm not surprised someone already listed her. Bjork is the worst.
It is kind of funny/sad, though that eventhough Mary asked about extremes of hating/loving, most of us (me included) just chose to go with the hate part... on the positive tip, i will always go to bat for Blondie, Devo, Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, Elliott Smith, the Wedding Present, Magnetic Fields......

Bjork makes me want to kill myself. It's horrible horrible noise.
Love Tom Waits! Doesn't matter if he sounds like Cookie-monster at times, he could sing the phone book and I'd still think he's a genious. I also love Pigeon John. When a rapper sounds a little nerdy that make him 100times cooler than the thug rappers.
Yes, Bjork sucks.
Man! what's with all the Bjork hating?! I will go on record as saying I'm a huge fan. Let's save all this negative energy for, say Tori Amos, ok?....
Bjorks attitude sux. She isnt qualified a real singer in my eyes or ears. No thanks!
