Memorial Day weekend

Posted at 11:48 AM on May 25, 2007 by Christina Schmitt

Local music pics for the weekend...

Tonight at the Turf Club is Radio K's Supporter Appreciaton Party, with a nice lineup of local bands: Mouthful of Bees, Digitata, The Chambermaids and France Has The Bomb. Viva public radio!

Tres chic or wishing you were? On Saturday, May 26, Thrifty Hipster is hosting Still in Style. Check out fashion by local designers and music by Doomtree’s Sims & Mictlan, Jessy Greene’s Audio Tribe, Mach Fox, Ashley Gold, DJs Attitude City and Bryan Gerrard.

Here's something for those who like to dress up, rock out and forget about the last time you went to a prom. Saturday is the Punk Rock Prom at Big V's in St. Paul with The Fillmores, the Debut, the GD Doo Wop Band and more. Listen to the GD Doo Wop Band on The Current's The Local Show (04/16/06 show).

I'm curious about Sunday night's Riot Act Reading Series at the Turf Club in St. Paul. For this installment are local literary heavy hitters Emily Carter Roiphe and Alison McGhee, plus music by Lonesome Dan Kase and Colleen Myhre. Hosted by local slam mainstays Laura Brandenburg and Paul Dickinson.

And remember Monday is Memorial Day.

"My 3 Songs" for Friday

Posted at 2:20 PM on May 25, 2007 by Steve Seel (20 Comments)

Well, here's a Friday set for sure. Christian Abrahamson of Brooklyn Center offered up "three classic funk stars that bring the chickengrease and make R&B acts like Justin Timberlake look like a bunch of corny double drags."

1) Prince: "Let's Work"
2) Sly & The Family Stone: "Poet"
3) James Brown: "Talking Loud and Saying Nothing"

"Double drags?" I'm not gonna ask.

Drive-ins!

Posted at 3:15 PM on May 25, 2007 by Stephanie Curtis (23 Comments)

I liked "War of the Worlds." It certainly wasn't the best movie I saw in 2005 but it was good. However, my "War of the Worlds" moviegoing experience was at top of my list for that year. I went to the drive-in, grilled some brats, chatted with friends while the sun went down and watched the skies grow not just darker but cloudier. A storm was moving in. By the time the Martians attacked, the wind had picked up and a slight rain was falling. The combination of mother nature and Spielberg was chilling.

It's Memorial Day weekend. Get to the drive-in! My favorite is the Vali-hi. They don't mind if you haul a grill in and cook. "Pirates of the Carribean" can only be improved by watching it with a hamburger straight from the grill.

Guest DJ Set 5/25

Posted at 10:08 PM on May 25, 2007 by Mark Wheat (2 Comments)

Someone asked me recently who my favourite DJ is, that's hard, but considering I have recommended Stephane Pompougnac's work perhaps more than any other, he would be the answer if I was forced to make a decision! I love the mood he sets, especially on beautifully sultry evenings after a nice sunny day. The Hotel Costes series is an awesome compilation collection from which you may find many other new faves to follow.
This set was track 7 thru 13 of Vol 9 ;
7. S-Tone INC - Con Mi Sombra
8. Parov Stelar - Kiss Me Twice
9. Status IV - You Ain’t Really Down (Jazzanova’s Hey Baby Remix)
10. Paul & Price - Little White Roses (with Todd Ivy)
11. Rhythm & Sound - Free For All (Soundstream Remix) with Paul St. Hilaire
12. One Self - Bluebird
13. Rouge Rouge featuring Karin Viard - Et toutes ces choses…

As usual I'd love to have your suggestions, who's YOUR fave DJ?
Next week another set compiled by DJ ESP !
Happy Holidaze!
