"My 3 Songs" for Tuesday

Posted at 12:36 PM on May 8, 2007 by Steve Seel (1 Comments)

Kit Kelly of Mpls submits "fugue rock" today. Kit elaborates: "The songs follow a narrative structure; 1. Live man goes down into the world of the dead; 2. "The repeat of history;" 3. The moment of metamorphosis, burst through into the divine or permanent world." Never let it be said that we don't activate your Joseph Campbell nerve enough here on The Current.

1) Interpol, "Stella Was A Diver and She Was Always Down"
2) Stereolab, "Crest"
3) Lene Lovich, "Sleeping Beauty"

License to Rock!

With all the rumors about Amy Winehouse as the next Bond girl (see Barb Abney's daily Stream), I've been thinking about the whole pop culture institution that is Bond.

I've long been a big Bond fan, and one of my favorite aspects of each Bond movie are the theme song and opening credits. Those openers are so stylized and artful--to me, they're the cinematic version of the Blue Note record cover. So Question #1 is: Which Bond movie contains your favorite opening sequence?

And how 'bout that theme song? The most recent interpreter of the Bond theme in Casino Royale was Chris Cornell (Audioslave, Soundgarden.) I have to say--he really didn't do it for me. My guess is they chose Cornell to reflect the new, grittier Bond--but it just sounded like over-produced grit. I found the song to be pretty generic and generally forgettable.

So, Question #2: Imagine you could suggest a band or artist to reimagine the Bond theme for the follow-up to Casino Royale. My pick? I so want to hear Phoenix do it. Or Feist! Or Feist with Phoenix!

Who would you pick?

Land of 10,000 Screamers!

Posted at 7:02 PM on May 8, 2007 by Danny Sigelman

Perhaps it's because of the lame and disappointing Amy Winehouse show at the Varsity I saw last week or the spectacular display of classic metal at the Dio/Sabbath, Heaven and Hell reunion tour I saw a few days later at the Target Center but I have been experiencing a need for heaviness in my music as Spring turns into Summer in these parts.

There's a few great local acts that have new material filling the bins or swirling around in cyberspace worth checking out. That is if your ears can take it!

The Babes in Toyland-like band, Baby Guts, who besides their great name pack a earplug-worthy wollop that has been getting the crowds sweaty and moving. They celebrate the release of their new record on Guilt Ridden Pop Thursday night at the Triple Rock.

The much scarier Ganglion have a few new songs that will shake the fillings in your teeth and make you want to learn Klingon just to decifer their lyrics.

First Communion Afterparty aren't as scary as they are just simply loud in the wall-of-sound shoegazer style fans of bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre or My Bloody Valentine would really dig!

I could probably reccomend some more but I can hardly think enough to type with all the ringing in my ears at the moment...what?! what?! huh?
