Apx 10:10 am your time yr anncr noted the date April 9 as "the end of the Civil War" and that General Lee surrendered his sword. Both NOT TRUE!
Lee surrendered The Army of Northern Virginia, not all CSA forces. Altho he was nominal commander of all Confederate forces he felt he had no authority to surrender all and in effect, the Confederate States. The war around the country - especially south and southwest - went on for weeks. Last Confederate forces to surrender were a Navy raider which had served in Pacific, went around the Cape, across the Atlantic, and surrendered to the British in England - afraid of reprisals by American officials.
General Lee was prepared to be taken prisoner with his finest uniform, sash and sword. Neither Grant nor anyone else asked for Lee's sword, nor was it offered, nor taken.
Not sure whether anncr said surrender was IN or AT Appomattox Court House. It was NOT in the Courthouse Appomattox Courthouse. Court House (two words) name designates the County Seat just as in Cape May Court House in NJ (which is south of the Mason-Dixon line).
Aplril 9, 1865 was Palm Sunday - businesses, offices were closed. Surrender was in the home of merchant Wilmer McLean, a few hundred feet west of the actual Courthouse building.
There is a magnificent national historical park there which anyone interested will be delighted to visit. Beautiful country, delightful remnants of original town which is NOT the Town of Appomattox, then only a railroad stop some miles west, now the actual seat of Appomattox County.
Hope you can get this on the air before the end of this hour so the same listeners hear the correction. If it was read from wire service copy, please correct that source as well. History should be accurate - we're sure you will agree.
From an old radio newsman, who just moved from Appomattox County to Vero Beach in Florida. Best wishes - we love your programming here on WQCS.
Lee Munsick
Good morning Lee - WQCS is in Fort Pierce FL, right? Perhaps you're thinking of what was said on our Classical Service. I appreciate the feedback, but just a note to let you know this is The Current's blog, our other music service.
