Ever have those revelatory moments when listening to particular pieces of music? Especially those instances when you realize that someone else's theory about something is true, and you've been wrong all these years? Here's what happened to me: I was listening to R.E.M.'s Murmur this afternoon. Maybe the fact that it was Good Friday had put me in the mood to listen to "Talk About the Passion," but there I was, crouched over with the headphones listening to the songs I knew so well. But something wasn't quite right; the verve and vigor I was used to from early R.E.M. was strangely absent. Then I realized where it was, and that's when I gasped and actually said aloud,
"Ohmigod, Reckoning really IS better than Murmur!"
What are your moments like this? Or would you rather just tell me why I had it right the first time? Come on, I know some of you are just itching to jump in on this one. Any takers?

This week on The Local Show, our publicist (and a rocker in her own right), Christina Schmitt, is filling in for Chris Roberts. The focus of the show is garage and surf rock from way back when, and she's dug up some real gems. My favorite: The Overtones' "Calhoun Surf," released in 1981 on the legenday local label Twin/Tone (the label that also helped propel the careers of The Replacements, the Suburbs, and the Jayhawks.) Surf music in the midwest? Well, why the hell not? On a windy day, there might be some radical waves on Lake Calhoun. Think the fact that there's no surfable water for miles means the Midwest shouldn't jump on the surf music bandwagon? Go tell that to Ronnie Lake--she'll change your mind faster than you can say "hang ten."
As an ex-Texan newly arrived to the Twin Cities (it'll be two years in August), I'm quickly learning that there's more to this area's musical history than Prince and The 'Mats, and The Local Show has been schooling me every Sunday evening for some time now.
What's your favorite piece of local music lore? Little known bands that I should be looking into? Local music gems lost in the cracks of history? C'mon ... school me!

Well, Passover is nearing an end and that can mean only one thing: flour tortillas and cake! Following the dietary restrictions of the holiday is important and taking time to reflect on one's place in the world is something everybody should do, regardless of your belief system. But, as Passover nears I get a hankerin' for that leavened goodness. Don't get me wrong: I love matzah, but it's not called the bread of affliction for nothing.
I converted two years ago and tonight's SFR, "That Old Black Magic," is by that famous Jewish convert, Sammy Davis, Jr.
Hey, whenever you have a couple hours to kill, check out Jewsrock.org. Now, we all know Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond and the Beastie Boys are Jewish. But, did you know, Mark Bolan was, too? So is Marianne Faithfull. And, believe it or not, so is Malcolm McLaren, the inventor of The Sex Pistols. Jewsrock.org is very entertaining. Find out who's who in the Challah Fame, test your Jewish rock literacy in "Jew or Not" and don't be late for Shul of Rock for some fascinating reading! Oy Vey!
