Hope this isn't too much of a downer for a Wednesday morning ....
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about my little brother, who's stationed in Iraq. He's been there almost a year now, and works with the convoys--dangerous job. This morning on the bus to work, I was listening to M. Ward's "Right in the Head," and I gotta say--that song hits real close to home. In a good way, and in a terrible way, too. In other words--in all the ways good music should. Some songs are just for humming along to, while others are what resonate with you, and even carry you through a tough time.
Ever had a song get you through a rough patch? Which songs resonate with you, personally?
Though I'm not as crazy about Modest Mouse's more recent work as I was of their early stuff, I've been hanging onto "Dashboard" lately like a drowning man to a life preserver: It would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know ... the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio. Wow. Issac Brock is the new Oprah.
Funny you should mention this today. I just discovered Explosions In The Sky (back off, some stuff just takes a while to get to me) and it hit me on such a visceral level it's damn near impossible to put into words. I discovered them through NPR's All Songs Considered podcast that featured their entire set from a recent 9:30 club gig. Listening to the introduction, I was told that the music is all-instrumental and lengths of songs can top out at something like thirteen minutes, so right away it was suspect...I wasn't looking forward to it. My preconceived notions couldn't have been more out-of-whack. The difference between this and most of your other prog-leaning sorts is EITS is all about creating moods within the music and far less about self-indulgent noodling.
Seriously, I nearly wept.
Of course, after visiting their MySpace page, I realized they're coming to First Ave on the 29th, so I go over to the ave's page and, lo-and-behold, it's sold out.
Then, I did weep.
Don't feel bad, I first heard of EITS via the Friday Night Lights soundtrack. (Back off, I'm from Texas.)
Kevin~ I like you was late to discover how truly amazing Explosions In The Sky are. Read lots of incredible reviews, listened and it didn't hit me right away. Now I can't wait for the show...definetly resonated in me too...
