If you haven't downloaded today's Song of the Day free podcast, why not? You got something better to do?
Seriously, though, the new one from Arcade Fire is lovely darkness--with a string section. For some reason, it makes me feel like going swimming, gliding underwater until I'm out of breath. I don't think a song has ever made me want to go swimming before. Weird.
Am I just still swooning from ELNo at our Listener Appreciation Party Tuesday night, or does "Black Mirror" sound like goth ELO? The wall of strings, the way the song swells ...
It's a great track. I can't wait to get my Neon Bible deluxe edition in the mail (comes in a cool box, with a 32-page flipbook and other goodies, and the whole concept of it is making me feel like a kid on Christmas eve.)
If you didn't already get your pre-order by contributing during our Member Drive, you can pre-order it here. And guess what? Your order still supports public radio!
Some people think Arcade Fire is overrated. Don't they know that pretending to be jaded is so 2004?
Can't forget to check out the band's performance on SNL from this past weekend! - http://www.culturebully.com/archives/2851
Goth ELO? I think you really hit it on the head there, Jacquie. The AF singer Win Butler does sound like ELO's Jeff Lynne, or maybe I just have ELO on the brain.
And Win Butler is like a sexy, young Christopher Walken!
What? I like my men a little creepy.
I think he sounds like Ian McCulloch of Echo and the Bunnymen.
Good call, Tony! I think there is just something about them that plays into so many aspects of my musical nostalgia.
i think that new song for a half second sounds just like "On the Dark Side" by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band(aka Eddie and the Cruisers).
that's not a bad thing, i'm just sayin'!
I agree with Tony. In fact I posted this a few days ago when we were talking about their appearance on SNL. When he sings in his higher register he sounds very much like Ian McCulloch..
Danny,
I totally hear Eddie and the Cruisers in the "Keep the Car Running" track. Is that the song you're thinking of? Also for the record, I dig "On the Dark Side," too. Gets me dancing every time.
