"Sir" Bono?

Well, since he's Irish, no. But Bono received knighthood in the British empire today. And while nobody will be calling him "sir" anytime soon, he did joke to reporters, "You have permission to call me anything you want...Lord of lords, your demigodness, that'll do..."

"Demigodness"? How about demigoddess? Jeez, what a diva!!

Well, I predicted it in the Musicheads article about The Police. I asked who's going to be first, Sir Sting, or Sir Bono? now we know.

I think I just started hating Bono a little bit more now.

Bono whatever he calls him self does not deserve it, there is others who do more than him and ali. He is phony and thinks he is God. He to help his own country and help them I have seen any improvement in africa at all. what does he do with the money I have that went to those poor town cities in africa and it still the same.

I never used to mind Bono's demagoguery until a little after How to Dismantle..., but now he kind of bothers me. I really wonder how long the rest of the band will put up with his shenanigans; then agan, if they've made it this far...

my god you people are sad, you all dislike Bono so much but the best you can come up with is this crap? if you dont like the system do something about it, shame on you all for wasting what little energy you have sitting at a computer bagging people who are at least trying.
And before any of you dares to say it, no I am not a Bono fan, I'm just a regular guy who's had enough of people like all of you sitting round on your asses making judgments on people when you have done nothing to earn the right to your opinion.
Get lives and then you'll see it makes more sense to go out and make someone elses day a little better rather than disrespecting people you don't know

everyone has the right to speak their mind. but I am a big fan of bono he is creepy. We are not jealous for him, He has alot of nerve to ask people for money. and the same time he backtalks about america. but america made bono and his bandmates rich. there are alot people who work hard for they do. And they give what they can to make a difference. And do not get reconize for what all we do. But bono is a big joke he could not make meads with his father. But. he his making himself a good christian, at others expense.I would like to see him rough it in Africa intead staying at a 5 stay hotel. I have a friend that went to africa and still having a rough time. and we help to send money as well to. bono needs to wake up and smell the irish coffee

1) he doesn't ask for money in the way you infer - he asks for rich 1st world nations to forgive the debts of struggling 3rd world nations so they can get on their own feet without the burden of unpayable debt. many of these countries are unable to sustain basic services you and i take for granted becuase all their funds go to paying ages old debt incurred when times were much different. the idea is that if these countries have a self-sustaining, happy population then maybe they won't become a breeding ground for terrorists and other anti-west fundamentalist loons that want nothing more than to ruin your day.

2) the demigod thing is a joke - this guy is very smart, very funny, and knows that this jesus-image foisted upon him is a great way to make fun of himself. his bandmates needle him with it all the time - so he probably doesn't realize that most of his jokes on the matter are missed. btw - don't care if you believe me or not, but having been in the music biz for 20 years i have seen enough of him and his band to know they are wise-asses and have a lot of fun with each other and their friends.

3) "backtalks about america"?? so what's with all the "support the troops" stuff he spouted on the last tour? what's with all the hanging out with pres. bush? ...also, bono is just as angry about 9/11 as any american as he has seen first hand what violence in the name of religious fanaticism has done to his country over the years. "bono" is a nickname given to him as a kid by his friends - also another nickname his friends and fam gave him is "antichrist" - ironic huh? (oh - they are joking by the way - they actually think he is the second-coming but just like to rag him anyway.)


4) why doesn't he rough it in africa you ask? well-he has.
in the eighties, around the time of the first live aid, he and his wife spent many weeks working with the famine victims in ethiopia, living in a tent in a refugee camp. and he has been back many times since to different parts of africa but what he has found is that the best way he can help is to use his access as a rockstar is to bring these issues to politicians and corporate executives - cause unfortunately that is the way you move issues these days. too many people prefer not to contribute to society and find it much easier to bang away at the keyboard bitching about stuff with small-minded unresearched opinions.

so does he know there are people like yourselves that don't appreciate what he does? does he know that you could care less that he spends most of his free time away from his family meeting with goverment and corporate leaders all over the globe on his own dime? does he know that some of his band's longtime fans might find this behavior unbecoming for a rock n' roll star and that maybe he should just shut up and sing. well - probably yes to all of the above but he could care less. he cares about doing his best to make a better world for his kids -as do most people- but he knows that he can do a little bit better than most people by using his fame and fortune. (he has four kids by the way - how un-jesus is that?)


so lets looks at what fame and fortune has allowed other rock stars to do:......

Britney - get a great haircut.........
Michael - buy an amusement park for his backyard to play in with his friends or to play with his friends in.........
Sting - the ability to enjoy tantric sex for a least 6 weeks between breaths............
Madonna - more acting lessons..........
Keith - oh i dunno - how about lets go to thailand and climb coconut trees and fall out of them...........
Christina - hire a personal g-string launderer..........
Cher - a brand new ass..........
Billy - a new convertible and a fifth of scotch - yeehaww.

Wow, I didn't realize a simple joke would engender this much defensiveness. But, that's what happens when you crack wise about a sacred cow.

First of all, darkshark, check my bio. You'll see I work for a radio reading service for the blind. My "day" job is to ensure that people who are blind, visually impaired, or have a reading disabilty have access to the written word. I hardly call that "sitting on my ass." I don't know what you do for a living. Perhaps you volunteer your talents and services for an organization whose worldview you admire. I hope your job allows you to directly impact people's lives. But, next time, don't be so presumtuous.

sparkyblack, all of your points are salient. But, nobody in this world is so high and mighty that they can't be the object of a mild joke every now and then. If Bono has a sense of humor, as you claim, then surely he wouldn't mind, right? Yes, Bono has given the plight of 3rd world countries a public face. But, the real heroes are the people who have made 3rd world relief a full-time job. They deserve the kudos that Bono regularly receives.

who cares how many kids bono has. They will never have to work. never have to worry about money they will be spoiled brats. like paris hilton. there is alot of people that do more work than him. he needs to quit music or do so called charity work.

It's a shame that only the rich have the time for charity work. it's CHARITY work people, that means they don't need to do it to make money to survive) and that's what this is all about. Most don't take it do so. Bono does some of the time perhaps, I don't know any more than anyone else. But really, Bono being knighted? WHO CARES!

Ok people... calm down, you'd think we were discussing whether it was ok for brangelina to be adopting kids.. just wait until the new altgod, Winn is doing the same good. you will hate him just as much. they are celebrities. that is why they get written about whether they are doing good, bad, drugs, you name it....make fun of them if you want... but to get so angry?!.... please...do you all have subscriptions to InStyle too?! jeezus!
