"My 3 Songs" for Tuesday, 3-13-07

Posted at 1:09 PM on March 13, 2007 by Steve Seel (5 Comments)

A sadly sweet set today from Brandon of St. Paul. He said, "I'm requesting these songs because I just had a very hard break-up with a girl of many years. It was somewhat mutual, but it still sucks." Got yer back, Brandon.

1) Sufjan Stevens, "For All the Widows In Paradise"
2) Wilco, "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart"
3) Ryan Adams, "La Cienega Just Smiled"

(corrected for typos)

Oh man, that's gotta be my all time favorite Wilco song.

Sorry to hear about your breakup, Brandon. At least you still have your music. Great set!

Two of my breakup songs were from the same albums--"Radio Cure" (for the "Distance has no way of making love understandable" line) from Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and "Harder Now That It's Over" from Gold. Maybe you can add these to your playlist.

Though "La Cienega" breaks my corazon, I never could quite figure that one out. A cienega is a wetland. I learned this while swimming one day at my favorite West Texas watering hole, Balmorhea state park. There was a sign by the swimming pool (which isn't really a swimming pool) that mentioned that the area is a cienega. Which really got me thinkin' about that Ryan Adams song--thinkin' as in, "Huh?" Why is he so sad that a wetland smiled and turned away? Is that song some sort of environmental thing? Sorry, Brandon--hope I didn't just undermine your sweet three song set! Remember, dear, a cienega is just a fancy name for a swamp. Here's hopin' the next girl is an ocean.
