Wow, I just randomly began a conversation with a nice looking gent and it turned out to be Money Mark! I love SXSW! He's coming up on our broadcast around 3:30 with Mary Lucia, but he's hanging out now, watching the Young Knives - who are very funny and are charming the audience with their tales of merry old England. The Sights are up next, and then The 4th Beastie Boy himself. He's very up on Minnesota politics, believe it or not. A super nice guy.... tune in for that interview; I think he and Mary are really going to hit it off.
It's a balmy 75 degrees outside.... about 82 inside the club, but we're eating all the chips and salsa we can possibly cram into our mouths in between band load in, set up, interviews, photo taking, blogging, and handing out our little oval window clings....
Oh boy, lunch is here! I'll let you know how the chicken tenders are in Texas....
Hey - Here's a photo of Melanie with Money Mark
The Sights just began their live broadcast performance. Their Hammond organ was too big to fit into the elevator or the up the stairway to the club, so they did some quick thinking and went for an acoustic line up instead. It actually sounds awesome. This isn't a huge room and it's been pretty loud and rocking so far today... a nice acoustic set is a good break for our ears.
Just a note about where we are today - we are right in the middle of 6th street, the busiest and most bar-packed section of Austin, and thus the hub of the fest. We have a beautiful balcony overlooking the street, and it sounds absolutely amazing inside and outside. The sun is streaming in, everyone is in a good mood, and we have had a steady stream of visitors since the minute we opened the doors this morning. Lots of Minnesota faces - in fact, Joanna James and Martin Devaney just popped in! - and our friends at Ecelctone Records are hosting a fab showcase later tonight with Little Man, Martin Devaney, Ruby Isle, the Honeydogs, Melismatics and more. Plus Brother Ali and Slug perform later tonight, too at a different showcase. AND there's a Red House showcase later with Storyhill, the Pines, Chris Smither and many more. Minnesota is well repped down here in our Sister City to the South!
One last Money Mark update.... he just finished a fabulous dancy funky set that had the house totally grooving. What a super nice guy! Playing the keys and guitar and backed by a full band, he defines the word "cool", but in a totally laid back, approachable and completely natural way. Just a fine gent all the way around.
We're waiting word on Brother Ali's whereabouts... they had some travel issues, so we'll see if they are able to get here on time.
oh.... Money Mark kissed my hand on his way out of the building.... sigh!
It's 72 degrees back home in MN too! Crazy. And then--speaking of random rock stars-- I ran into John Pearson just randomly...and he too is dancy funky and up on Minnesota Politics. How funny is that?! But he's totally approachable too.
Enjoying the vicarious SXSW visit. Love the play by play. Nice work you guys.
