Library Goodies

There's been many news stories recently about our library system struggling to survive.
It almost seems ridiculous to suggest that there are many great reasons to use them...
books are good, it's that easy! But they also do a good job of supplying other forms of entertainment and education, moral or musical, in tape and DVD form.
This winter we have seen a bunch of classic movies and BBC TV series and last week the missus scored big time with 'Man in the Sand' a documentary that follows Wilco and Billy Bragg as they try to decide which songs to record for their 'Mermaid Avenue' collaboration. Woody Guthrie's family had discovered a pile of over 1,000 songs that he had finished writing lyrics for before he died, Billy and Wilco 'just' added the music. You'll learn a lot about Woody 'the Okemah prophet' and see how he has influenced so many of the artists we play.
Many of these rentals are free, we can help support the system to keep them that way.

Right on, Mark. And if they don't have a certain title at your branch you can always reserve it and they can pull it from any other branch in the network. umm.. and it's free. My wife and I get all of our DVD veiwing from the library. We end up watching a lot of stuff we would have otherwise glossed over or forgotten..

Hear, hear! Well done, Mark.

We go to the library at least twice a month and I usually come back with a stack of CD's and some books. We don't get a lot of DVD's (we have too many of our own to watch currently), but you're definitely going to find the odd gems that your local video store isn't going to carry.

I just got Nuggets II four CD box set out of the library a couple of weeks ago. This highlights the British Garage/Psychedelic era from 1964-1969. I've barely heard of any of the bands, but I've learned a lot about the era, and certainly can hear the influences filter into later Brit Pop and other bands.

And where else can you pick up Wayne Newton, Dwight Yoakam, Tuuvan Throat Singers, Lynyrd Skynyrd's Greatest Hits, and Chet Baker at the same time? I love the library! get out an support yours people!
