A few weeks ago, after playing a White Stripes song, I ruminated on the air about how any day, the band could make an announcement that they had banged out an album and would be releasing it within mere months. Hooray! It looks like this spring will bring us the next White Stripes record, bizarrely titled Icky Thump. They always seemed like something from a Tim Burton film, so the title makes perfect sense to me. One of those things we can count on, I suppose: in odd-numbered years, the White Stripes will release an album.
That title, 'Icky Thump', seems a slight alteration of 'ecky thump!' an exclamation that's popular in the north of England, typically used when somebody's surprised or taken aback by something. Perhaps the White Stripes heard it on tour and thought it would be a cool name for an album, which it is, really.
Well done Luke!
That's exactly what I thought when I read the post and it is one of my favourite old English expressions. It's also a nice twist because 'icky' seems more Americanised so it reflects their love of both cultures.
Icky Thump?!?
Wierd. But then, what else should one expect from Jack White?
wasn't "ecky thump" one of the most popular episodes of "The Goodies?"
Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden, and Bill Oddie's BBC television show from the 70's. I used to watch it when they stopped playing Python on Channel 2.
Found this online:
Bill reveals himself to be a Grand Master of the infinitely more subtle and superior Lancastrian martial art of Ecky Thump.
i love the quote "We are doing our best to release the album as soon as corporately possible".
may explain the yet to be realized vinyl release Jack had planned for "Get Behind Me Satan". there were some initial vinyl only promo releases of the record but the commercial version was to be recorded live by the band straight to disk using an ancient recording lathe.
an ambitious idea no doubt the label gave the red light on..
You know, come to think of it, maybe Get Behind Me Satan was the kind of record meant to be heard on vinyl in the first place. It was almost so homey and quaint, it didn't make sense in its surroundings (especially being released the same day as the bombastic X&Y). I think it's time I re-evaluate Get Behind Me Satan, largely because I have a feeling Icky Thump is going to be more of the same. But then again, the Stripes are always good at subverting expectations...
