Here's a quick list of local music shows you should check out this weekend -- bands I respect playing at clubs with cheap-to-no cover charge

All the local critics are writing about tonight's CD release party at the Entry for These Modern Socks. Check out what Chris Riemenschneider thinks...

Also tonight, Dan Israel's birthday party. He's playing at the Mad Ripple Hootenanny in the basement of Java Jack's, 46th and Bryant in south Minneapolis. FREE.

Saturday, March 10
We're never going to get over Bob Dylan, so get used to it. Tonight is a particularly strong Bob Dylan Tribute at the Turf Club, with Superhopper, Andrew Broder (Fog), Rank Strangers, etc... In conjunction with the Weisman Museum's "Bob Dylan's American Journey, 1956–1966"

Also on Saturday at the Hexagon Bar
The always loud and heavy STNNNG; plus the new band of Sicbay's Dave Erb, The Yoleus. I will probably be at this show. FREE.

And one more for Saturday: This one has nothing to do with rock, but everything to do with independent artists. One of my favorite visual art galleries, Outsiders and Others, is closing. This is really sad, so stop by their gallery closing party and give them good energy. FREE. 7 p.m. Outsiders and Others, 1010 Park Ave S, Mpls.


One last note: Riot Grrls unite Sunday night at the Triple Rock. My favorite band from last year, Duluth's The Keep Aways, are a must see. With Baby Guts (think manic panic pink hair and Bikini Kill), with Dizzy Obstetrics and Poor Posture.

The Yoleus, eh? I see one of the dudes from V9R9D is in that band too. Sweet. Should be a good show.

Outsiders and Others is closing permanently? Oh that is sad. I loved that gallery. I found some of my favorite local artists by visiting that space. Though this is a great town for local art galleries, it's too bad that a place that is dedicated to showcasing non-traditional artists isn't going to be around anymore. Plus they did a lot of outreach to the homeless and disenfranchised community, which was an awesome part of their mission.
