Our household is a strong supporter of public schools. No education system is perfect, but my wife and I grew up in the public schools and, by God, that's what Red is going to do! Her school happens to be of exceptional quality. It's an International Baccalaureate school in South Minneapolis. Her teacher is great, the curriculum is outstanding and the principal is the kind of hands-on educator that her previous school lacked.
The other day she came home and asked us if we "had ever heard of Charlie Bird Parker." She had learned about him in her "Musical World" class and she seemed particularly excited about how he had acquired his nickname. I knew, basically, that it was because of his strong taste for chicken. But Red shed a little more light on the subject. Apparently, while on a road trip the car he was in struck a chicken that had wandered on to the road. Perhaps feeling that the bird shouldn't go to waste, he insisted on retrieving it. Later that evening the band had a delightful dinner of road-killed yardbird. Mmmm, mmmm good!
Tonight's SFR is a Bird classic, "Koko," remixed by DJ Spooky.
