So the National Association of Record Manufacturers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame got together and compiled a list of what it deems "the definitive 200" -- apparently the most essential 200 albums in pop history. You can find the full list here, at PopMatters, but the enclosed article also muses on how the list only underscores how important the song is to pop music. Mark Wheat ominously rang the death knell for the album on a recent episode of Musicheads: is this an important question, or not?
And perhaps most importantly of all, in ranking Kid Rock's Devil Without a Cause ahead of Johnny Cash's At Folsom Prison, has the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame proven once and for all that it is completely irrelevant?

Marcus Frost of Wayzata thought it would be "a good time to pay my respects to three bands/artists that did it right," he said. "Old school, yes, but still completely relevant. All three were uncompromising and were done with still so much music left in them." He adds, "Get back together Talking Heads!"
1) John Lennon, "Oh Yoko!"
2) The Band, "To Kingdom Come"
3) Talking Heads, "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)"
Nice choices, Marcus. I too wish Talking Heads would give us at least one more record; although I'm not sure of the likelihood of that ... I've read some pretty scathing things that Tina Weymouth has said about David Byrne. I mean, the kind of things you'd think would preclude any possibility of detente. But who knows? Stranger things have happened in music. The Van Halen thing imploded again, but they got as far as posing for a picture. With all that hate between David and Eddie, that's crazy enough, isn't it? So maybe there's hope for The Heads.

James Mercer of The Shins sat down with Salon.com for their "Audiofile" feature for a cool conversation. There's also a podcast version of the chat that you can check out -- the link is underneath the photo of James' nicely unshaven mug.
