Taking London by storm

Can't quite explain the thrill I got from reading a blog entry in one of my favoured UK mags that does a pretty good job of being on the web too, Uncut. The Editor went to see The Hold Steady at the weekend...www.uncut.co.uk/blog
Unlike Craig and the boys, the news of The Police reunion doesn't seem to have anyone in the UK excited at all!! The NY Times reminded us at the weekend that they were once the biggest band in the world, over here. But we haven't played them as a relevant influence and other than Sting's big hits on some stations across the country their band profile seems to be horribly low, for an ex-biggest band in the world. Curious, why is this?

And here I was, thinking that U2 was "the biggest band in the world". I stand corrected!
I'm afraid I've never been a big Police or Sting fan. I just never found their music terribly compelling, with the possible exception of his pedophile scandal anthem "Don't Stand So Close To me".
On the other hand, Eva Cassidy's cover of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is absolutely terrific, so I guess he gets some credit there.

What an incredible review of our favorite hometown rock-n-roll poets! As soon as I got my hands on "Boys and Girls In America" I started telling people "Just wait - this album is gonna break them wide open". And by golly, I was right!
Kudos to Uncut for recognizing true Minnesota genius when they see & hear it.
They didn't do themselves any favors by having such a lackluster performance on the Grammys. I was a huge Police fan. I think all their albums are great.
I guess, my ho-hum attitude has to do with Sting's post-Police career, which is just so blah! As he got further away from the Police and more into whatever drivel he was recording, I just couldn't imagine those guys getting back together under any circumstances. And we all know how they hated each other when they were together. A reunion seemed not ony unfeasible, but just impossible. It's hard to find a reason to care much.
I still think Stewart Copeland is one of rock's all-time greatest drummers, though!
I agree w/ Tony. Sting's output after the Police was drivel. I was never a huge fan to begin with and Sting's post-Police career has left me way cold. Plus he just looks to d*mned smug all the time.
I also agree with Tony on the fact that Stewart Copeland is one of the best rock drummers of all time.
I heard Andy Summers interviewed on Sound Opionions and DeRogatis mentioned that he saw the Police and sat behind the drum kit and Stewart had all these vile anti-Sting epithets written on the drumheads. Man, they hated each other.
When I was in college, I postulated on my station's online forums that Stewart Copeland was one of the all-time bests. An ex-music director admonished me and pretty much said I was a moron who would be better off listening to Phil Collins' Tarzan soundtrack. He was an unusually bitter man.
I don't think The Police have a horribly low profile.
- Their biggest hits are still played on commercial radio every single day on multiple formats.
- Sting has never stopped playing those songs in 20 years of solo shows.
- Copeland toured as a member of Oysterhead with Trey from Phish, giving some exposure with the jam band demo.
- High profile radio hits sampled them for a younger audience within the last 10 years.
- No Doubt and others mined the vein of mixing up a punk/new wave vibe with ska/reggae beats, 15+ years after The Police called it quits.
- Their prime audience 20-25 years ago are now middle-aged and will shell out bucks for reunion shows.
Setting aside the art, and looking at the commerce, the timing is right for their "brand." I'd say they've got the perfect mix of conditions to be selling out shows and making a mint like they are.
While The Current doesn't need to add anymore spins of "King of Pain" or "Every Breath You Take" to the radio universe, you could easily play stuff off those first three records. They'd fit fine. I'm not even a big Police fan, but I think the reunion tour might be a good time.
