Purple Raining

Was it just hometown pride, nostalgia for 1984, a complete disgust with most forms of top 20 music these days, or just my imagination? Was the Prince half-time display the best one in recent memory? I was really hoping he'd pull out those old staples of his wardrobe, the butt-less pants, but he was quite dignified up there in all that rain. (Could've done with less of the dancers, though.) The real money should have been on what he was going to play, rather than on the outcome of the game. "Purple Rain" were a no-brainer, and I was not surprised (but completely delighted) to hear "Let's Go Crazy" - but the Foo Fighters? THE FOO FIGHTERS????? Who saw that coming?

I feel like the U2 performance from the year following 9/11 can't really be counted as a normal half-time show, what with it being so emotional and dramatic and the country looking for a time and place to weep and scream collectively, while wearing football jerseys no less. So, with that exception, what's the best half time show you remember?

Also, did anyone else think that in a medley-type of situation, it was odd to leave James Brown out of it?

Leaving out the Godfather was strange. I loved the "All Along the Watchtower" snippet. And doing "Purple Rain" was just too perfect. Who knew Prince could control the weather, too? I'm just glad he didn't slip and break a leg!

We had three or four people staring at the TV shouting, "what's he playing now? Is that new? No, it's Watchtower!" Then later, "what's that? That must be new. No, it's a Foo Fighters song!" Brilliant.

The dancers were a bit frantic. Aside from their likely value to the folks in Miami's nosebleed seats, they were justified, IMO, by their contribution of the Ikettes-approved "rollin'" hand motions during the "Proud Mary" excerpt.

I liked that His Royal Badness chose cover tunes that managed to evoke multiple forebears: Proud Mary checked Ike & Tina and CCR; Watchtower hit Hendrix and Dylan. And Best of You of course brought to mind Dave Grohl, which touches on Foo Fighters, but also Nirvana and Tenacious D.

Tribute, indeed.
