Project?

Since when is it that if you're in a band, you call it a project? I don't get it. The trend these days is for a musician to be a band and then have 20 other projects on the side. Doesn't that just mean you're in multiple bands? Whatever.

And at what point does a sideproject become a full-time thing? I wonder if Carl Newman thought the New Pornographers would be around this long. What about Broken Social Scene?

I think "project" has been around a while ago. Alan Parsons anyone? But I think the real reason is that "project" conveys "work", while "band" conveys "more time spent with friends". Like so much else in life, it really is just semantics.

I sense that "project" is a catch-all term for "something that may lead somewhere or may not." "Band" implies commitment (to one's band-mates, audience, record contract, etc.), whereas "project" is a more open-ended thing where the exploration of the musical ideas comes first, and the commitment to all the other trappings comes second. If a "project" becomes a "band," then so much the better.
