It's Hard to Soar With The Eagles When You Are Surrounded By Turkeys.

The Grammys really stumped me this year. Some great records received some recognition, but they again, there was that little tribute to the Eagles... Oh yeah, long overdue on that. (Not) "My Humps"??!?!? Best Pop Performance?? What in the blazes? That's like the worst song ever written. (Of course, the Pussycat Dolls were in the same category, so go figure.) Interesting how much the Dixie Chicks have been re-embraced this year, though there were a few people in cowboy hats NOT clapping when they won Song of the Year. Local boy Dan Wilson sure got a lot of face time - good for him! Nice props for Wolfmother, Bob Dylan, Gnarls Barkley, and The Flaming Lips.. but did anyone need to see Lionel Richie do "Hello"?? In 2007? The answer is, of course, "no". And don't get me started on Christina Aguilera doing James Brown. Seriously, don't get me started. As for the much ballyhooed Police reunion - "eh". Sure it was good to see "Roxanne" done the way it it supposed to be played, and not just by Sting solo, but the hype had me hyped more than that one song delivered, I have to say.

I was happy to see Gnarls win a couple, but how on earth did they lose Record of the Year? Anyone who voted for the Dixie Chicks over "Crazy" is delusional (but then again, this should be nothing new for longtime followers of the Grammys). It was also nice to see wins for Wolfmother, Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Someday Baby", and Jacques Lu Cont. But the Black-Eyed Peas? John Mayer (again)? It appears the Grammys are always inventing new ways to disgrace themselves.
Ali, are you absolutely certain you shouldn't get started on Christina Aguilera covering James Brown?
Every year the Grammys are a smack, reminding me of all the music I don't listen to whether I don't listen to it because it is off my radar or simply forgotten. Really, I watch and then check my iTunes & the stacks, or scrunch my face at the screen wondering o 0 (Who is that?! Everyone seems to know who that is and they're fawning over their album.)
We should hold our own Grammys. Or does this count?
Note to Grammy organizers next year: Please consider keeping the people in their seats or set up the presentation stages so fancy-dress attendees don't have to combat crawl when the cameras are rolling. I felt so bad for the folks in finery scurrying about, all furtive & embarrassed.

Also Ali, that was some righteous righteous indignation you were workin' up there. I would also like to see you "get started." My only fear is that you would get me started.

I don't know where to start.... the absolute travesty of "My Humps" being awarded anything other than a big old "Trash It"? The horrid sight of Christina squeezing all the soul out of "It's a Man's World"? The fact that neither Lionel Richie nor Don Henley should ever step foot in front of a microphone again, unless they are at a casino playing the early bird special? Or should we reopen the conversation of whether the reunion biz has gotten completely out of hand? Seeing the continually aging Sting sing the line about the Lolita character in "Don't Stand So Close To Me" may be more creeperific than I can handle.... yet I'm torn.
I loved the Police in their day. Truly. (Andy Summers was always my fave.) But how much do I want to relive "De do do do, de da da da"? Maybe some moments are best left where they occurred....
Thanks to a steady diet of MPR's news station and the Current, not only were most of the Grammy Award Winning Artists and their albums entirely off my radar, but the Grammy's themselves didn't even manage to rear their ugly head.
